Surely that's the gearbox?
I think thats the general consensus on this forum but I'm starting to think its something more. In 2018, 2019 only Ferrari had exactly this type of sound but then it more or less disappeared in 2020.
It could just be the mic placement but i think there's more going on behind the scenes here
If it is gearbox I would surprise too much. I always thought that is electric motor spins turbo
I also think its something turbo-mguh related but cant really say anything for sure

Max Verstappen suggests Red Bull’s new RB16B Formula 1 car has banished one of the worst traits of last year’s challenger and is now "predictable".

The pitch of the sound seems to go lineair with the speed. How can it not be the final stage of the gearbox or the diff?

During all full throttle areas there is a very hard working e-motor sound there. Are they using electro turbo instead of mgu-k help for more traction ? Higher compression ratio, more torq from ice and smoother reving up. Just assumptions.

Well I might be missing something but you can sort of tell which is which by thinking about whether or not the frequency varies with speed or with engine RPM. This seems to be the former.

Yeah I agree, the frequency definitely varies with speed. Does that mean its the gearbox?

Well the MGU-k is fixed to the crank so its RPM is always a fixed function of the engine RPM. A fixed ratio.

Is Red Bull facing some technical issues today or are they trying new bits? Not too many laps with less than an hour to go :?:

Ricciardo is on 45, Perez on 39 so I think they are just testing things

Discounting Vettel because of gearbox issues, Perez has done the least number of laps in the morning session. For a new driver in the team trying to acclimatize with what supposedly is a tricky car to drive, I would have expected higher number of laps from him

A new driver needs to set up the car to his liking, doing x amount of laps rather than going in to fix it for the later session is not better imo

Yamamoto's interview:
·As it was Honda's last year in Formula 1,so HRD Sakura changed the plan and worked very hard to bring the “new skeleton Power Unit” for 2021 season(it was original planned for 2022 due to the COVID-19).We want to catch up with and even overtake Mercedes with the new Power Unit,we were working hard for both Power-up and reliability.
·Of course maybe Mercedes will improves more than Honda expected, just like last year .But we also had learned from last year's lesson, the new PU produces(a good level of)power to fight in Honda's last season. The reliability part is not 100% yet,but in Sakura,Asagi Yasuaki(Honda F1 PU development general manager) and the engineers was working very hard and doing everything they can for the Bahrain test and of course the first race.
·To improve the efficiency of the combustion chamber and aim for more power, we changed the way about designing and making crankcases and cylinders. Simply say, except for the already mature MGU-K, we reviewed and remade everything including materials.Thats why we called the PU“new skleton PU”.
·I am very happy about the good relationship between Honda and Red Bull.We didnt pay any money for the Honda logo.Last summer,I told Horner and Tost"if you guys cant find new title sponsor, then how about put the Honda Logo in the rear wing next year?"Then they didnt sign new title sponsor as we know, and now we can see Honda logo in both 4 cars.

That's a really nice gesture on RB's part to include that massive honda logo without any charge whatsoever.

Sure, but it seems more likely it is part of a payment to Honda for the ongoing Red Bull Powertrains program surely? Sponsorship instead of cash. That would make more sense. :)
