AlphaTauri AT04

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

With the season re-starting, a reminder for everyone that the car threads are moderated more strictly than other threads, with the idea that car threads should focus on the hardware and interpretation of how it works. And on the specific car in each car thread, please. We like our car threads shorter, focused and fact dense.

If a post is about the competition side of F1, be it faster/slower than, lap times or driver behavior, please, post it in the team threads instead (or even in the race thread!). Team threads are moderated very loosely, go wild in there. Future car parts, also in team threads, please, as they are by definition speculation, at least without an insider source.

Posts made in the car threads that are not focusing on the hardware are subject to be moved to other threads or, most likely, removed (as there are too many).

Upgrades for Monaco ive spotted so far. Team has mentioned that the floor upgrade they were expecting to bring to imola was a "significant step" so probably a couple of tenths. Should bring them within touching range of the midpack.

New floor edge wing design, more similar to what RB run. Lacks the complexity at the forward section.

Image

Significantly revised front of the floor, with the outwashing channel. After their major redesign of their floor for the beginning of the season, they've converged yet further towards what others are doing in this area - particularly McLaren.

Image

New up & outwashing vane on the outer face of the rear wing endplate (first seen on alpine's car) - improves diffuser performance.

Has there always been a crease in the sidepod? In the pic above it looks like there is (around the T in “Tauri”) but might be some lighting effect.

No - you're right that's a new feature. I saw it made a mental note and never double checked to see if it was there before.

Great spot :D the car seems to be quite similar to the Mclaren overall.

Does anyone know what Yuki's issue with the brakes was? Did they get too cold?

It sounded like a continuation of last year's issues.

The aspect ratio seems odd? It seems taller than it is wide...in comparison to some other teams.

I want to say camera distortion, but the knits and buttons look perfectly circular and unstretched. Quite odd.

There's distortion there in many of the geometric parts.

Magnify the "mode" dial and you'll see it pulled down to 5 o'clock area.

Also the screen top/base horizontal lines are curving upward at the ends in classic "pincushion" image distortion telltale, pulls the corners outward to extend them.

Most small form image devices (phone) have quite significant distortion to chip, then correction takes place in image software to make them normalised. It's a function of having very wide angle lens that places the image chip very close to the subject.

Looks typical of current devices in close quarters usage.

Some lens distortion and also just perspective as the right side is closer to the camera than the left.

AFAIK the screen and lights are a standard piece so i tried to remove the distortion based on that - here's a comparison to (last year's) Ferrari, McL, Merc and current Alpine:

Image

From what i can tell the wheel is 1:1 the same as the one on the RB19 and the Red Bull teams with Alpine seem to be the only ones with this 'higher' wheel with an extended grip and extra spokes, Aston also has those spokes but it has a flat bottom and isn't any higher than the others.
For the sake of completeness: Alfa , HAAS (2021, still the same design) , Williams (main outlier with screen on chassis)
