Better to employ a fast but un proven driver than a has-been/never-will-be...

He's got speed and I expect that Toyota waved free engines at Williams...it's a no brainer.

I'd like to see them get an experienced test driver in though to help with the car development.

I think it's a smart move by Toy ota to make sure they are ahead of FW in WCC2008

Nakajima and Rosberg are the confirmed drivers for 2008.

So does this mean that the next McLaren driver will be Kovalainen? After this I think he is the strongest candidate.

Schumacher & Heidfeld had been BMW's choice as well... nothing new. Nakajima is rather decent IMHO.

It's looking like it, all the rumours (and we're in the silly season now so that's all we have) are that FA is going to Renault maybe for 2 years and his contract is being paid for by a number of Spanish based corporates.

http://f1.gpupdate.net/en/news/2007/11/ ... t-renault/

Which means no Ferrari for him either!

After this then we'll have the testing to look forward to and who has built a storming car for next year and whose car is a total donkey!

if nano goes to renault i will be happy with his decision.but i still have a doubt that whatever happens we can certainly rule him out of the championship next season.

anyways can anybody tell me for how many seasons kimi is contracted to ferrari??i heard its till the end of 2009.

and massa till the end of 2010.so alonso has to wait till 2009 to drive for ferrari.

if i am dreaming plz wake me up..

Rumour alert. All

information in the linked article is, at least to a degree, speculation. But this is in keeping with the best traditions of silly season, so read on. What games are these? - link, grandprix.com.

Well yes, it is all part of the silly season, but today F1-live had an extract from spanish financial newspaper expansion that states that Latin america telephone giant Telmex-America Movil will put 100 million in to rule out competitors Telefonica as Renault Sponsors and allow BBVA and MM in.

http://en.f1-live.com/f1/en/headlines/n ... 5544.shtml

This move will also imply that ING will step out. Even though this all may be a bunch of rubbish, it is very interesting to see how big coorporations and big money are in motion just because one guy decided to change teams =P

And It will also allows us to dream about a blue Renault livery once again :D

Well the orange was always an uncomfortable colour on the Renault ;)

I think the signs are that the simplest and most obvious solution will happen...

Renault - Alonso + Piquet (lol another Rookie ;) )
McLaren - Hamilton + Kovy
Toyota - Trulli + Glock
Williams - Rosberg + Nakajima
etc

It's definitely not

rubbish. Carlos Slim Helú (World's third richest man by assets I think, controls Telmex too, for those of who don't know who he is) has already invested in motorsports. Actually he's involved in so much that it propably would've been impossible for him not to. But being a main sponsor for an F1 team is not a marginal investment, even by his standards - and that man is all about numbers. Supply, demand, return, a natural businessman. Renault, with their (self professed) budget discipline might actually be the partner for him in F1.

Carlos Slim was also mentioned as a potential F1 investor ages ago already, or so I recall. Right now I can't remember what that was all about and even Google searches are drawing a blank as all the answers seem to concern the latest deals being formulated. ING, though, is a giant indeed, managing some €500Bn in assets ... in this situation it'd be interesting to know how much, if at all, Carlos Slim and ING have invested in each other. ING will have invested enormous resources beyond their direct sponsorship in Renault F1 to related advertising, market research and so on. They will surely have a well thought out strategy with long term goals and it's going to be both costly and risky to alter those dramatically.

In other words I wouldn't be at all surprised if ING felt that giving up on their sponsorship can only happen if those costs and risks are compensated for. That could add a significant sum of money on top of what Telmex, BBVA and such would have to invest directly to take ING's place at this point. Admittedly having a Piquet/Alonso pairing would make headlines in some very attractive markets for them. It's another thing where Ghosn sees Renault's long term growth - ING has more universal clout, and there's a definite synergy in that partnership with regard to going to China and India.

Perhaps we've got to be a bit careful at looking the way these deals are formulated through the drivers' viewpoint and wishes alone. There are companies involved that make profits larger than what the net value of F1 in itself is, after all. A cynic would also say that BBVA, for example, would get a lot of positive publicity for only being seen to consider supporting Alonso at this point (not to mention teasing Santader a bit for sticking with McLaren ...).

Yeah, I kind of doubt many business people of his ilk are concerned with supply or demand. Their care is for return on investment above all else. He'll crunch the numbers - how much TV coverage will I get in my markets by being associated with FA and the team - and how this stacks up against just doing the same dollar value of advertising.

Sometimes and empathy or romantic notion of motorsport by a senior exec helps to get the ball rolling but, in the end, if it's not delivering the idea gets dropped pretty quickly. This is why F1 is moving to newer markets - much moreso than trying to replace team cigarette sponsorship/funding which teams have lost. More countries and more people = more sales of TV rights. F1 bounces their rights around to whoever will pay the most - and ruthlessly so.

Alonso tipped for Renault return - link, BBC Sport
BBC Sport, quoting Christian Horner speaking on Spanish radio, wrote:Our drivers are under contract in 2008. Alonso will end up at Renault.

We are pleased to be linked to Alonso, it shows the progress that we have made in the last two years.

But Renault are the only team next to Toyota who have a free space and who have not announced their drivers for next season.

Toy ota confirmed Glock for 2008 as Jarno's team mate.
f1.gpupdate.net wrote:Toyota confirm Timo Glock for 2008

19 November 2007

The Toyota Formula 1 team today confirmed that Timo Glock will race for the Cologne based team in 2008 alongside Jarno Trulli. Glock was still under contract with the BMW Sauber F1 team, but after the Contract Recognition Board reviewed both his Toyota and BMW contract his Toyota F1 contract was found valid.

Timo, the reigning GP2 Series champion, has signed a multi-year contract at Toyota. It is uncertain though if Glock is allowed to test with the team in Jerez in the first week of December as the German is still contracted with the BMW Sauber F1 team. Toyota admitted already in a press release that the team hopes an agreement can be reached with BMW Sauber to allow him to test at Jerez on December 4-6.

Glock commented on his signing: "It's a great feeling to be a Formula 1 race driver again and I am really looking forward to this new challenge. I have worked hard over the past few years to get this opportunity and I must say I am grateful to Panasonic Toyota Racing for having faith in me.

"From what I have seen of the team at the track I am confident we will be able to work well together to move forward. Even though I have not raced in Formula 1 since 2004, I have tested quite regularly so I expect it will take very little time for me to get back in the groove.

"I have been lucky enough to race and succeed in several different championships in my career but my goal has always been to become a full-time Formula 1 race driver. I believe this experience has made me stronger as a driver and as a person."

Glock further more said: "Of course, to return to Formula 1 racing as GP2 Series champion is a real honour and we've all seen how well Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton have performed as champions so that is very encouraging. I hope I can also make a strong impression next season. Now I have achieved my goal of returning to Formula 1, my next target is to work towards making 2008 a successful season for myself and Panasonic Toyota Racing."
Looks like Renault is going to be the only seat available for FA :)

News of Glock was already online here too!

Btw, it appears that Red Bull remains a possibility for Alonso. I read that Tost declared that Alonso and Red Bull are still having talks about a possible contract.
