Its basic math. He did not magically stay ahead by being slow. I could understand if Hamilton was fighting him and could not pass.
But hamilton did not even reach Max at all.
The reason for this if we look at the sector and time gaps is Max simply had enough pace to manage the race for the crucial moment.
Mercedes was not fast enough to even mount a challenge.
