McLaren MCL36

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

A little better look at mcl's front floor and entrance, the strakes seem pretty straigth forward, and some floor edge stuff going on. All in all, this strikes me as a very clean, do i dare call it immature car. Seem they wanted to focus on, a very healthy basis concept which they can build from and which they can verify/learn without to many distractions. A very mclarensk approach.

Would make sense, considering Mclaren need to get on top of 2 new suspension layouts. Will be interesting to see how they fare against Red Bull....

Something I'm quite interested to see more pictures of is the inboard floor strake. It looks like they roll it down to connect with the tea-tray, so that the flow from the splitter travels over the top of the floor (as in previous generations of F1 car) rather than being ingested into the floor. It seems to be a unique solution on the grid and probably harmonises quite well with their centre loaded FW, as well as providing some more bulk flow outwash.

"Maybe it’s just the fresh tyres on the McLaren but its direction change through Turns 2/3 looks terrific - and it has enough grip that it can take a wider approach to 3 after finishing the exit of 2."

Amazing pictures! To me it looks like they have some space left under the radiator towards the floor, which backs up earlier suggestions that they most deliberately did not go with an undercut sidepod design. They could have added more undercut if they wanted.
