Yes and no. I have read that wheel guns light green light on a supervisor remote then he push a button to give green light to the driver.

I think it' the guy in the top right who seems to do nothing

Edit: yes it's him, you can spot the remote cable from 0:03 to 0:05
There has to be someone to over see the release, otherwise, with a completely automated system there would be no-one to prevent an unsafe release.

Yes, and it's my understanding that the lollipop man can override the system in the event that it would cause an unsafe release, but otherwise it's automated. That's the whole point of the system, to eliminate the fractions of a second it takes for a human to recognize the stop's completion.

Here's a still shot of our pit stop technicians. You can see one guy watches traffic, the other watches all 4 tires as well as the guns being tied into the system.

1 checking traffic.
1 lollipop man.
12 guys doing tires.
1 rear jack man.
1 front jack man.
2 guys holding the car steady as it´s on the jacks.
And two extra guys for this pit stops adjusting the front wing.

It looks like the front guy who lifts the car is connected to the system but i wonder when does the green light comes on when he releases the car, or wheel-guns are out etc. Must be a complicated system to be done all in 3 sec.

I understand these are two completely different tracks, but the difference in the car is unmistakeable.

That's what I was talking about earlier. The car is clearly much more stable.

To determine a safe release, could they possibly use a sensor a set distance behind their pit box which senses when there are cars in the pit lane at that particular point? As the cars are under the pit lane limiter, it would be easy enough to calculate what the minimum safe distance would be before a release would be unsafe. I think such a system would allow for perfect releases every time.

There is a physical marker for each team's reference IIRC. If another car is beyond that marker then it's an unsafe.

I thought so, but we still see unsafe releases so would an automated system like the one I described be permitted, or does it encroach on the other team's space?

I don't think Alonso minds having Massa as a team-mate, while what he wants he usually gets, after all, this is Scuderia Alonso now, isnt it? Having said that, this guy has had a strange impact on myself, perhaps it was breaking MS' winning streak in 2005 or his no-nonsense attitude at McLaren, refusing to accept a rookie as an equal number one?

Either way, he's one great driver.

The thing is that looking at the constructors table it is extremely sad to see how far down Ferrari are despite Alonso jointly leading the drivers championship. Massa is completely and utterly useless, in almost every sense in the context of being an F1 driver. And to think that he'll probably stick it out for the remainder of the season... but Ferrari are the only ones to blame. Massa won't leave by himself.

Alonso needs a real teammate, as anyone would.

True enough, but at the same time you have to identify a suitable replacement, not only speed-wise but also height-wise as the car obviously is tailored to Alonso's size, while acceptable to Santander who pays for the show?
