He was 2 tenths down on what he managed last Saturday, and probably due to making a couple of mistakes in the final sector. Looks like the heat was playing into his hands today, which is a shame because Sunday is going to be cooler than today has been.

I do think qualifying will happen, as the rain will be on and off throughout the day, easing off around the afternoon, Sunday will be bone dry.

I don't know if Verstappen was on less fuel but he was the only one that could do consistent low 9's in the long runs.

Let's see if the upgrades and countermeasures work as expected and we see a stronger package than last week. Also important to not screw up in quali if the rain comes

Did anyone else notice that the front wing was swapped on the drivers' car today? Is it just me who thinks Max looks stronger with this package?

I also do wonder if Max's run was a fully fledged quali run or not.
Nope the pics clearly show Max on the new front wing and Alex had the old spec on.

A pic is one moment. It is clear you have not watched all footage Of today’s running but why then make statements on things you don’t know. You should be more carefull.

Verstappen says the update improved the feeling of the car, maybe it's just placebo, but a confident driver is a fast driver.

Fp1 Max used new spec, Fp2 both cars reverted to old spec. Still experimenting with the balance it seems although Max is getting the most out, he had a tank slapper after turn 2 on one of his fast lap.

The commentator said something about Albon's 'shark fin' possibly upsetting things, I did not catch it. Anyone get what was said please?
When arguing with a fool, be sure the other person is not doing the same thing.

Max Verstappen: "The car already feels better than last week, the balance is a lot nicer to drive and we have made a good step. It is only Friday Practice and of course it is too early to say how we are looking against Mercedes, but from our side I think we are quite happy. We have tried a few different directions to understand the car a bit more and I think we are heading the right way which I'm pleased about. We have to see what will happen tomorrow with the weather but otherwise we will find out where we really are on Sunday. Normally our race pace is more competitive but already over one lap we can't complain and actually the 11 laps I did in last week's race didn't look too bad, so it can only get better. Even if tomorrow the weather is too bad for qualifying I expect we will still have Sunday morning to do it, so I don't expect to be on pole position with this lap."

Alex Albon: "We've been getting a bit creative and trying some different things compared to last week's running here, some of the changes worked and some didn't, so it's a bit of a mixed day. The weather for tomorrow is obviously a bit of an unknown so let's see what happens and if we're even driving, as every time it's rained here it's been a monsoon. We'll still treat tonight like any other Friday though and look over the data to see what we can learn ahead of tomorrow. Late in the session I pushed a bit too much on the exit of the corner, nothing serious, and lost the rear. Max obviously had a good session and is comfortable with the car so hopefully we can learn a little bit from his side of the garage and take a step forward."

Tanabe: We are back at the same track as last weekend, when we had some issues with the two Aston Martin Red Bull Racing cars. With the teams, we analysed their causes and together we came up with a solution that we have run today. All four of our cars had a smooth day, but now we will carefully check all the data overnight, including that which relates to the changes we made. As there’s a chance of heavy rain tomorrow, we ran a slightly different programme and it was nice to end up with Max topping the time sheet.

It was a mouth fart from Crofty - the others ignored it and it wasn't discussed further.

There was an ongoing discussion about the cars recently becoming very sensitive and unforgiving of snap oversteer and they were speculating that it was because of the shark fin. Not Albon specific but applied to him because he also spun
