This is exactly why they won’t let them open whenever they want. Drivers will always push the limits to breaking point - and imho that’s motorsport (as Martin brundle would say “the throttle pedal goes in both directions”) - but from the FIA’s perspective they don’t want to incentivise the drivers to do dangerous things. Someone would inevitably push their luck and have a massive accident, so they prefer to avoid that.FrukostScones wrote: ↑14 Feb 2026, 15:20Will we see that again this year?

That said, the zones they have should still be pretty good. I think the FIA will want to allow it as much as possible because the more often they can shed drag, the less pressure there is on energy consumption.
We want to see drivers over driving it.f1316 wrote: ↑28 Feb 2026, 23:05This is exactly why they won’t let them open whenever they want. Doohan last year into T1 in Suzuka is the comparison you are looking for.langedweil wrote: ↑01 Mar 2026, 15:52I still feel SLM is gonna bring mayhem when for one reason or another becomes disfunctional (ie not closing) in/before a highspeed corner.
Kinda like the intensity (not cause) of Ver's shunt in copse (2021) ..
Although not through dysfunction, rather the driver being incredibly optimistic (he tried it in the simulator).Peter Ian Staker wrote: ↑01 Mar 2026, 18:13Doohan last year into T1 in Suzuka is the comparison you are looking for.langedweil wrote: ↑01 Mar 2026, 15:52I still feel SLM is gonna bring mayhem when for one reason or another becomes disfunctional (ie not closing) in/before a highspeed corner.

Yes, I agree and I would like if its use was ‘on demand’ for drivers. As I say, it would also help minimise drag, which is a stated aim of the FIA.FW17 wrote: ↑01 Mar 2026, 08:56We want to see drivers over driving it.f1316 wrote: ↑28 Feb 2026, 23:05This is exactly why they won’t let them open whenever they want. But in this commercial world with drivers who have built such a large brand image for themselves, I dont they want be exposed to scrutiny on their ability against others by being on the limit of DRS every straight for 300 kms of a race.
