McLaren ran with a more closed wheel fairing in Holland.
These can both help smooth the aero wake behind the wheel and by insulating, transfer heat from the brakes into the wheel/tyre. Both small but subtle effects.

I think the other wheel is just as sealed, but the styling is less aerodynamic?

10.7.2 e. There must be no passage for air between the inboard and outboard cavities of the Wheel Rim. Any closing panel may either be integrated into the rim or may be a separate piece. All separate closing panels must respect clauses (d), (j), and (k) of this Article. Closing panels which are not required to prevent airflow between the inner and outer cavities are not permitted.

This means both must be fully closed.

I guess you missed all of the last era (2022~2025) during which McLaren started with appalling brake duct facility, that seemed to, inadvertently, flow backwards !
To, ultimately, state of the art in leading all the other teams with their design and implementation of highly detailed ducting and separation of intake and exit for cooling and exhausting the air after heat transfer.

Many good pictures are included on the McL car thread all through that period, also with non permeability of wheel rims, as directed by rules implementation.

I remember the first iteration of the brake ducts that cooked the brakes so fast they used titanium on them.

By the end of that rules cycle they were exquisite and Fabergè egg like in their design and execution.

Plenty of images as they progressed on the car threads of McL. Everyone else appeared to be taking their design from this team.

I'd expect the same to be hidden inside these wheels of MCL40 now.
