Fernando Alonso has ruled out racing with a Mercedes-powered car for the 2015 Formula 1 season, saying that his future is “obvious” even if he has not made his decision public yet.
The Spanish driver is set to leave Ferrari after five years to make way for Sebastian Vettel, and has been widely tipped to join McLaren next season as the British team rekindles its partnership with Honda, who will return to F1 as an engine supplier.
However, Alonso has been linked with nearly every possible opening on the grid, including Lotus which has confirmed it will be using Mercedes engines in 2015.
The power units produced by the German marque have been the best in Formula 1 this season, making them desirable for any driver chasing the world championship. However, Alonso said he does not think he’ll be racing with them in 2015 when asked by NBCSN’s Will Buxton about his future.
“I don’t think so,” Alonso replied when asked if he would be driving a Mercedes-powered car next year. “The options are quite clear.
“As I said in Suzuka, when you know the options, you will say ‘it was so obvious’. Wait and see.”
The options for Alonso appear to be either driving for McLaren or taking a sabbatical in 2015, but the speculation about his future is only set to continue until we get a definitive decision from the two-time world champion.
That's what Ron thought when he stood in the Montreal pitlane telling the media Lewis had no-where to go.Vasconia wrote:According to some Spanish newspapers(which are not very reliable most of the times) the negotiations between Mclaren and Alonso are not in the best moment. Ron Dennis has realized that Alonso has not a better option than his team so he is trying to change some of the conditions that they had previously agreed.
According to these sources Alonso was trying to sign with Mercedes, but the announcement of Vettel and the almost confirmed deal extention between Hamilton and Mercedes has let him with no more chances than Mclaren.
Well, but in that case there were more options. In this case is Mclaren or Lotus, and Lotus seems to be a very risky movement, yes they change to Mercedes and they could build a great car like in 2013 but who knows. I am sure that the atmosphere is better in Lotus and Alonso could feel better here than in Mclaren with Denis, I dont know how it can work a Ron-Fernando relationship in Mclaren, too much sh*t between them.Gaz. wrote:That's what Ron thought when he stood in the Montreal pitlane telling the media Lewis had no-where to go.Vasconia wrote:According to some Spanish newspapers(which are not very reliable most of the times) the negotiations between Mclaren and Alonso are not in the best moment. Assuming Ron remains, there's been rumours about him being replaced too after all.Vasconia wrote:Well, but in that case there were more options. If i'm correct, Honda stated they have a Mclaren-exclusive contract for the time being, i'd say that is 2 years before they'll ship other teams their engines. RedBull Honda will never happen, Mclaren will not want it and they'll be the Honda Works team, so they can 'veto' it i think.Richard wrote:I wonder who Honda have in mind for their other team(s)? Alsonso in a third car at Red Bull Honda in 2016?
He did once say that he wanted to win at Indianapolis.Miguel wrote:This is getting silly, and I can up the ante!
Gets a wildcard for the Indy 500, where he (obviously) laps the competition. More acclaimed than Jim Clark, because the talented scot somehow never won at monaco (both are 2x WDC!)
He never won it in Formula One, maybe he'll try it in IndyCar?"It is always great to go racing at Indy. Fans at Indy are fantastic: They are pretty serious about their motor racing and their passion means there is a great atmosphere. I hope we are able to go out there and put on a good race for them. Indy is another of the tracks that I want to win at; it is so historic and is a very important circuit in this sport. To have a trophy from here in my collection would be fantastic."
