Mercedes AMG F1 W03 (pre-launch speculation)

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

something resembling a Upod but only toward the rear of the pod.

Could quick draw this! Or just show on the picture!

I don't see how this would bring any benefit – the purpose of a U-pod was to provide a clear path for air, wouldn't starting it half way over the pod simply cause the air flow to become detached around that area?

That also bothered me! How? I dont now1 We need exact clarifications about that what you exactly mean...

Same side pods inlet and differend rads layup and u rear? Somethin doesnt make sense! Maybe do you just mix the words, that will be logical explanation?

It can be used to funnel air onto the beam wing, no?

Doesn't simply having a tightly shaped side pod do this, across the entire length of the beam wing?

Note – when McLaren used U-pods they actually *ended* half way over the side pod – so that the air could spread out and feed all of the beam wing, rather than just a narrow channel. I don't see (unless I'm misunderstanding how this is meant to be laid out), how this will work.

Raptor; are you actually suggesting they make a U-shaped side pod bum; and having the U shape as the rad exit? So you'd have two rad exits; one on each side?

Not entirely sure beelsebob.

It will boil down to aero numbers, remember though that this year the exhaust gases will be aimed(general consensus) at the rear wing. So any air that can be channeled onto the beam wing will be a benefit IMO.
Maybe there is a benefit to blow a specific part of the beam wing?

Raptor can answer that :D

Yes I am.
The reason Iam thinking along these line is that since the EBD is gone, dumping fast flowing hotair from the radiators via an exit thats low down and closer to the diffusor could help keep diffusor exit velocity.

Having the U-shaped rear of the pod draws air into the largevolume created and the hot radiator exit gases speeds it up through adding heat.

I'll draw up a sketch andrefine what I'm thinking.
Remember with the shorterdouble deck radiator they have a long flow path to prevent airflow separation.

Also we not talking about super sonic velocities here, at subsonic the iar fow will tpretty much follow the general shape of the car provided yo can keep the air flow velocity up for the length of the car.

LAst year the hot radiator outlets were centrally mounted to follow the Red Bull. They did that becuase their EBD plumbing took up a lot of in pod volume.
This year they are routing exhaust gases out the top of the body ork so they can vent that in to the U exit.
Basically with the layout I have inmind they could blow almost all their hot gases within a very short space and ahead of the rear axle. close to 2010 EBD configuration just not as extreme.

if we look at the rear of the W02, the hot air exit gills were situated low down and rearward. This could remain but with a more refined exit.

Or those exits could be shaped into an extreme version of the McL U pod.

Ok enough talking, let me start sketching and post later.

Mercedes has already raced their version of the Lotus Reactive Ride Height System, and it is believed to have helped lap time gains of around half a second. Merc is on their game and will grab some podiums in 2012.

They have raced ride height system? Is there a reliable source for that?
