New T10 apex speed is over 30km/h faster than the old layout. That's at least 1s gained there, and yet FP1 fastest lap still almost 2s slower than 2020 FP1. I think by now we've had the clear idea how much the 2021 regulation and the tyres has damaged the pace.
This year's Hungary quali might be 3s slower than 2020.
... But they travel on a longer path and the back straight is effectively slightly longer aswell, I really doubt the new layout is anywhere near 1 second faster...
New layout is just 18m longer. Even with the apex speed 110km/h you just need a little over 0.5s to go over that distance.
30km/h higher in a slow corner like that would actually mean a lot more than 1s. For example, 2-3 km/h higher through La Source can be worth 1-2 tenths. With 30km/h higher it not only speeds up the cornering but also shortens the braking on entry and partial throttle on exit.
I lowballed with 1s because I don't want to make 2021 pace sound too bad lol
Official track lenght is basically just the lenght of a measuring line stretched across the middle of the track, how much more do the cars travel on the new racing line, really?... The old corner was effectively a 90 degree right angle turn, very low apex speed, but hard on the throttle on exit, the new T10 is a constant, long radius corner with obviously a much higher minimum speed, but progressive acceleration and a much more acute approach angle to T11... And again, I didn't say the new section wasn't any faster, just definitely not 1s+ faster...
