Scuderia Ferrari SF90

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Binotto said that this weekend they will release first batch of updates on SF90. So we could see some changes
It will be interesting to see if they have fixed their correlation issue since last year.

Ferrari 1-2 badly needed. Can the straight line advantage outweigh loss in the corners.
Most likely not, they loose a lot in the corners, and by the time they reach the straights, they'll be in DRS distance (in the unlikely event they somehow get to be in front of a Mercedes).

I'm expecting every top team (and most of the midfield) to bring updates this weekend.

It's the first real opportunity for the teams to introduce lower-downforce specifications that will be used at other tracks on the calendar like Spa and Monza.

I'll be curious to see if Ferrari's updates are "general" . . . or more circuit specific.

Any updates to increase the downforce will result in extra drag and less speed on the straights.

So without some miracle they are only going to rob Peter to pay Paul.

If they have a balance issue the benefits of having a car in the proper setup window will overcome the loss of the speed on the straights.

Speaking of updates . . . Ferrari supposedly ran a significantly revised floor in China.

The opened up the size of the floor slots ahead of the rear tires in order to help increase the venting power of the slots.

They were trying to increase the overall effectiveness of the diffuser. More efficient path for rear downforce; better than having to run a bigger rear wing.

Specially on this track, each drs strait has two slow speed corners right before it, so any low speed cornering issues will be magnified.

The slot in front of the rear tyre has been there since launch. They tried a version without it, that also had 3 vertical fins attached to it, during winter testing.
Not sure about that little slot next to the long vertical fin which can only be seen in the drawing though.

They were talking about the size of the slots (which had been opened up to a greater extent), rather than their mere presence.

"The only significant update on the Ferrari in China was to the rear of the car, with this extensive opening up of the slots around the rear tyre."

I can't tell a difference between this one from testing and the recent one from China.

The SF90 is still the launch spec.

In my opinion, the slots look noticeably larger in the China photo compared to the image you shared.

Especially when you zoom in.
