Heh, that's a little confusing. I assume this is a mule car?

If they didn't get any running, do we think that could impact their 2022 development? My understanding is all teams are being given equal opportunity to run the new tyres and rims, but if there a technical difficulties then I guess it's tough luck?

We don't have probably the fastest car on the midfield, but we seem to have, you know, probably the best team on the midfield, so that allowed us to score points every Sunday.

That doesn't make a whole lot of sense. So when Alpine finally replace their old engine and old chassis in 2022, will Alpine be up there with McLaren fighting for race victories? :)

He doesn't mention McLaren at all.

Everyone is replacing everything but the PU next year. Every single piece of the 2021 chassis is illegally in 2022. You name it, it needs to be completely redesigned.

The started earlier and have more wind tunnel time. Why not.

That's true, but they are midfield competitors who started at the same place (in the midfield) and previously used the same power units. :)

If I am not mistaken the McLaren chassis came from behind, overtook and was already starting to edge ahead of the Renault in 2019 and 2020, despite identical power units at the time? Some might say McLaren have shown a greater rate of improvement than Renault. :?:

I guess you could pinpoint the 2019 RS19 as not bringing the improvement over the 2018 RS18 which Renault would have expected, therefore setting Renault back in their development efforts? I.e., needing to catch up again, instead of surging forwards towards racing Mercedes and Red Bull.

2017:
6th Renault 57 pts
9th McLaren-Honda 30 pts

2018:
4th Renault 122 pts
6th McLaren-Renault 62 pts

2019:
4th McLaren-Renault 145 pts
5th Renault 91 pts

2020:
3rd McLaren-Renault 202 pts
5th Renault 181 pts

2021 (incomplete):
3rd McLaren-Mercedes 215 pts
5th Alpine-Renault 95 pts

Excellent! =D>

For comparison's sake here is Renault's previous progression. It would be unusual, but not impossible to go directly from 5th fastest to fastest car.

2001: 7th Benetton-Renault 10 pts
2002: 4th Renault 23 pts
2003: 4th Renault 88 pts
2004: 3rd Renault 105 pts
2005: 1st Renault 191 pts
2006: 1st Renault 206 pts

The rules weren't there in that nobody had though of and/or the ability wasn't there to designing a car based on photos of another.

They've improved the rules but they may not be perfect..they may need adjusting.

Several scenarios made the RP coping of the 2019 Merc even a consideration.

1 - the technology was there.
2- the 2019 Merc was 2 seconds or more faster than the 2019 RP.
3 - Merc already had found changes for 2020 Merc that they weren't threatened by RP using the 2019 Designs.

The reason the Mercs were so much faster was cause of running for several years with triple or may more or RP's budget.

The introduction of the CAP has eliminated points 2 and 3.

Hopefully the regs take care of the rest.

This still remains to be seen but in the future if any car is consistently 1 second a lap faster than the slowest car, people will start to question if they are cheating. The cut off might not be one second, it might be larger or smaller but something like that. The big 3 were only the big three cause they spent so much more money that everyone else.
Interesting point.. I’d like to add to it there’s also the possibility that even if you could potentially “share” information on aero, this year has shown how badly that can go if it goes bad with Aston Martin, basically being a mouth piece for Mercedes’ struggles regarding the floor. I think this scenario more than any rules will make them think twice about working so closely together again hopefully.

It appears to me, since McLaren are battling Ferrari for 3ird, he's not considering them as midfield.

It's the first time we have a CAP. Think those years don't apply. Literally Williams can win next year(obviously, they just got handicapped by Russell leaving). None the less, everyone is just one good idea away from winning next year.

Alpine expects return to normal F1 form at Sochi.

Budkowski said the team knew in advance that Monza will be a struggle for the A521.

"Sochi will be better, not quite perfect for us, but better," he told Motorsport.com. "I think we should be back to our level of competitiveness that we've had so far, which means qualifying in the top 10, and racing for slightly bigger points.

"I think given our starting positions to be honest both cars in the points is a decent result. Monza is a circuit where we knew we'd suffer, as our package is not the most adapted to these kind of circuits.

"Honestly, coming out of here with five points in the bag, with AlphaTauri not scoring, actually it's a pretty decent weekend.

Fairly interesting article...

https://www.gpblog.com/en/news/94523/al ... group.html
The comment below the article puts a slightly different tinge on it...
What a shitty clickbait translation.
The word used by Laurent Rossi, in the German paper (probably translated from English" was "Thema" not "Problem".
"Thema" is neutral. Like theme or topic or subject.

Translating it to a "problem" for the whole Renault group is misleading and shameful.
While 'shameful' maybe a bit overstating it, if you consider he meant it as a neutral term, then he could simply be talking about the restructure and how everything is more streamlined now. But it was encouraging to read some of the other aspects of performance that Rossi mentioned and the team seems to have improved on. Positive signs for next year that they're starting to get their processes right.

Ferrari bringing new PU at Sochi RU. "Its main purpose is to gain experience for the 2022 car project."

Why Renault aka alpine not doing that? if you want to win WDC and WCC you need to take some risk and spend money. without it is very difficult..... even number of rule changes.

Not sure what Alpine cooking behind the scene.
