Yeah I don't think we can take a win on pace here, Mercedes have been in another class in the dry, they have to be gunning for 26 points for Hamilton surely? but taking a penalty here would still put them ahead of Verstappen on the grid, with a faster car at this track makes a lot of sense than taking it at Turkey where I think Red Bull will be the quicker car
Not sure why everyone thinks McLaren had much better pace in Monza. Mercedes (and Red Bull) are always class of their own, that's the default. What is different is whether they have enough pace differential to overtake and whether the track allows it. In Monza they had a quicker car, probably a half a second or second quicker but because McLaren is quick on the straights they could never get close enough for an overtake (Norris end of stint excluded).
It's not impossible that similar can happen tomorrow. There is a long straight and if McLaren can edge away there that makes it much harder to overtake. We'll see, hard to say really, but looking at the chart Barretto posted on Friday, McLaren is only 0.4s behind Mercedes on race pace which if they end up in a DRS train, could mean no one overtakes for a while. Let's hope Ricciardo jumps Hamilton at the start.
My point is, this type of pace differential is normal, but in Monza it allowed us to win.
