All Bottas had to do was stay right there in the middle of the turn. He literally just stepped aside for Max to waltz right through the middle.
Bottas did not even have to defend, he just had to drive towards the inside of the corner.
But I blame the team, at least tell Bottas to try his best to defend from Max behind.
For Sure!!

If you look on the onboard of Bot, you can see him hanging directly in the rear of the AT for nearly a lap, struggling and sliding in nearly every corner. Maybe this was the error, Ver had actually quite some distance to Bot in spots where he can not overtake. And we know how sensitive the Merc is on temps, maybe Bot cooked it in no time with being on the tail of Gasly and came to the DRS straight with much too hot tires giving him a bad exit and no grip on the brakes.
According to the debrief he was struggling with understeer.

Red Bull are really rubbing it in, I wonder if next time Bottas will make it a bit harder...
It's not probably wise to keep prodding or mocking him, seen as it was only recently they were publicly accusing him of deliberately crashing into them. It's all a bit bush league and lacking in class, really, and it might come back to bite them.

And I'm sure they (and others who find this sort of thing amusing) wouldn't take too kindly if Mercedes posted something taking the piss out of Verstappen or Perez.

A racing driver should not need to be told to defend from the driver behind him.

You mean the last time in Hungary in the rain?
Bottas collided with his Mercedes just after the start on a wet track against Lando Norris who in turn badly damaged the side of Max his Red Bull.
RBR didn't say anything about deliberately crashing! Why are you accusing them of that?
It is well known that Bottas is a bad rain rider, RBR knows that too. Bottas would never intentionally crash with anyone, he is far too honest for that.

Christian Horner said his team had suffered “hugely bad luck” after a first-lap collision involving both of his cars at the Hungaroring.

“That’s the brutality of racing, isn’t it? I think that unfortunately you saw Valtteri make a poor start, he obviously misjudged his braking and he’s done a great job for Mercedes in taking out both of our cars."

Yes. No one with half a brain would doubt Bottas’s integrity, Horner was being ironic.

They dumped him after everything he done for the team, and even screwed his race. Now you expect him to do the dirty job for them, after he's been doing it since 2017 and still got dumped.

O yea he did!

“Great strategy from Mercedes,” Horner told Auto Bild.
“Valtteri did a great job for them by knocking out both of our cars.”

Even horner's way of claiming he didn't think Bottas did it intentionally is passive aggressive.

Toto wasn’t driving the car, his driver was driving the car. I’m sure he didn’t tell them ‘crash into Red Bull’. I’m sure he wasn’t that sorry to see the result, but I’m sure he didn’t tell Valtteri to do that.

Some fans can say anything they want, but the first two quotes don't magically get nullified by the 3rd one.

Do you feel the same about Ocon letting Hamilton pass him in Monaco?

I don't recall that incident to be honest.

That's an overly simplistic example.

Bottas, was/should have been racing Max.

Ocon wasn't racing Hamilton, he even stated as much. Not to mention you will regularly here the commentators and radio messages about not losing time fighting someone you shouldn't.

“Basically my answer is Lewis had pitted before, it’s like on track [he had a] 20 seconds advantage. We were not doing the same race at that time.

“It was useless for us to lose time against him. The important thing for me was to not lose time against Gasly, against Alonso, all those drivers I was fighting with. That’s it.”

"should"... yet he didn't.

Probably the only reason he didn't was because; he didn't care in defending anymore.

And he ended up in 5th anyway.

If that's the case, he still needs to be careful! The team could easily decide to release him early and just bring in the reserve driver (VANDOORNE), or negotiate to get George early. How embracing would that be for Bottas?
