ICE only for Bottas, and only a 5 place drop!
ICE is 10 places.
Incorrect. When you take the first new element over your allocation for any PU component, it's 10 places.

Any new component after that is a five-place penalty.

So, if HAM ever takes a 5th ICE only, it’ll be 5 places.

Should be 15. That's a silly as heck rule!

Bottas lost his Monza engine, so he was probably down to two again. Same for Hamilton, I guess, so another change may indeed be incoming as well, especially as those Mercedes engines are reported to massively lose power after 4 races.

In Hamilton's case, they already used all the engine #2 components for the ICE-only change last race (according to AMuS). Not sure they are able to do that again?! He may need a full unit instead, which would still mean a back to the grid penalty

Works both ways Verstappen has already taken the 10, so his next ICE would only be 5 spots.

Hmm. Well I am surprised to see such a huge gap even if it is early days.

P2/3 will know how real that gap is, if it really is going to be an extreme gap in performance or not.

If its real, then that is really surprising. Whatever they have found aerodynamically, must be a genius solution.

on Bottas' engine – no way are these engines just dropping like flies. They would be changing Hamilton's engine more often if that was the case. They must be investing and testing solutions in the ICE and opening them quickly to test if their solutions are working well. Must be using Valterri as a test bench for this and next years engine solutions.

I read somewhere that is only the 4th, and 5th and subsequent are only 5 places. It does give the option to burn through ICEs though.

Should be 15 for them all.

Actually. I could see it as 5, 10, 15, etc. That way a single blowup doesn't necessarily end a championship fight.

Ha! Thanks. Gawd that would be awful. Credit to anyone that wants to walk up there, but I bet the view of the track is wonderful. (Assuming you may then know first hand?)
I have pro motorsports photo friends. Clients often want a shot at some point up there (say a race start or even a cool pan) but it’s a commitment because getting up and down eats most of a session.

Most of them also hate photographing COTA. Poor sight lines / framing, need big lenses, and a PITA to get around to shot areas.
Interesting- thanks! Yeah, I think I'd not want to lug my gear all the way up or down there either TBH. Shame the circuit isn't more photo friendly.
I really don't think you should climb a tower where the elevator broke down because the ground is unstable...

Even though it’s only FP1 I’d be surprised if RBR can recover from this. Like I said since Silverstone: from here Mercedes will just walk away with the WDC and WCC

you might be right. This is where MCS has been so dominant in the metric of team performance.

Pitwall / Race room - Red Bull 🥇
Pitstops - Red Bull 🥇
Manufacturing & Development – Mercedes🥇
Engine - Mercedes 🥇
Aerodynamics - Red Bull 🥇

the last one is contentious for me, I think Newey makes the best designs, but Mercedes is quicker at development and extracting performance from their concepts. The engine is a bit contentious, Honda might be on par, and reliability remains an unproven metric this season. Honda have just been amazing this year.
