Re: 2021 AMG Mercedes F1 Team

Post

The team principal of the world champion team admitted that the black arrows gave up part of the aerodynamic load (and therefore performance) in order not to affect the reliability of the bottom, while Red Bull gave the feeling of taking a few more risks by having to resort to wing reinforcements granted by the FIA for safety reasons.

Toto Wolff, team principal from Brackley, gives his key to interpretation: "We had to give up part of the performance to avoid "massacring" the bottom that was touching on the bumps and breaking so we adopted some mitigation to make sure we got to the end of the race.

Mercedes had to raise the single-seater to avoid the annoying bumps of the American track, but the effect of this modification, which preserves reliability, affects the dry lap with a loss of aerodynamic load.

Ok. Nice! I love these little trade offs!
So to not give up any speed, RedBull are taking a risk of cracking the chassis, but Wolff as ever is playing it safe to not drop any points.

RedBull's higher rake might be good to protect the rear of the floor, but at the same time their front wings and suspension could take more of a beating.

Maybe the Merc will run beter with full tank, lowering the ride-height a bit.

Wow, wonder if Red Bull will run into some issues then with floor damage? They usually run the tea tray closer to the ground.

Honestly, I would think they'd be more concerned about the rear wing. The fact that they changed it yesterday because of micro cracks could be an issue In the race.

The question is, why didn't Merc reinforce their wings instead of compromising performance?

They clearly went the wrong way about it because Toto was livid post-qualifying yesterday.

Also, one has to consider that cornering speeds will be lower in the race and therefore minimise the risk of damage/failure.

Red Bull doesn't appear to have done anything, so they are most likely more at risk of an issue during the race.

Merc just have no response in this championship, so frustrating to be a Hamilton fan. If he takes a new engine that pretty much seals it.

Well, the drivers championship is gone. Maybe with some luck Merc can win the contructors.

The regulators can be bappy now. They managed to stop Merc with this stupid floor reg.

Well, if they would've overcutted Ver, then this would've been an easy Ham win. But again they just made stupid tactical mistakes.

Yeah, RB had a faster car too. They really handicapped Merc with the floor cut this year. Bottas also keeps being a non-factor in the race. I really wanted Hamilton to get the 8th before the new regs. Mexico will be damage limitations too, unfortunately.

Merc was faster on hards and had a much better tyre wear. James messed up again. The regs didn't help for sure, basically they handed the win to RB with this token system and spending cut.

You can never tell in Mexico. Passing is basically impossible so it will be down to qualifying and I don't see any particular reason why it should favour RedBull this year. It's a high downforce setup. Track is smooth. Tyres stay well. Mercedes still have a hope and prayer..

We can win this.

Fair enough, I wonder whether the ride heights affected how the car worked the tyres.

Merc looked awful on the mediums compared to the RB, but looked marginally better on the hards. So clearly, RB worked the tyres better than Merc all weekend. Wonder if it's all related...
