computer configuration

hi guys .

i'm planning to buy a new computer this month . my main purpose is to run cfd softwares .
my current options are AMD ATHLON64 3000+ and PENTIUM P4 3.06GHZ .what should i opt for .

i 'm a bit hesitant abt buying AMD since there isn't a motherboard for AMD supporting PCIE . the downside of intel is that they are 32bit processors.

what is the processor speed of AMD 3000+


also pls tell me an ideal configuration for running CFD .

not the right forum to post it but I will answer ur question as far as I can.

the clockspeed of that amd is 2.0 ghz. amd is faster in most stuff, but I don't know about cfd software. you have to check some review sites about hardware. for example http://www.anandtech.com

There's no software in the market yet that takes total advantage of Athlon 64 64 bit architecture. I suggest you to by the Pentium 4, with as much memory as you can get and a fast HD (at least 7.2K RPM). But to make use of a big memory, you must use Windows 2000 or Unix/Linux operational system.

Umm... i dont know where you have been but there are at least 5 PCI Express board for Athlon64 (some board even have 2 PCI E slots for SLI configuration.

Besides, if you want computing power, you shouldnt EVEN hesitate but choose AMD.

even if thats the case, only thing PCI E offers you is just better graphics for gaming... since you said yourself that you will only be working in CFD, PCI E is a mute point... (and if gaming is important, AGP still offers exceptional gaming experience with high end graphics card).

Go for an AMD every time buddy - they are much quicker at floating point operations. In my own experience - anything more than 2 GB of memory is unusable as the iteration time is too long. In fluent, you get around 1 million cells to 1 GB of memory and that took around a minute per iteration on a AMD XP 2000... Im now running the AMD FX-53 but don't have any timings to give you - sorry
