There was one point that was debated hard during the year was, the aero changes were "targeted" towards Mercedes and it was "known" that the changes would hit Mercedes.
Elliot then said that it was a general loss of downforce and not a specific balance problem, which Mercedes feared during the first test. "I think with a dominant car, like we had before, the balance for the drivers didn't really matter," said Elliot. "That's why I think it wasn't really a balance problem, but more of an overall aerodynamic loss. However, it's impossible to say if it hit us as hard as the other teams. We don't know what the impact was on other cars. After we finished our work in the winter and the car went onto the track during the tests, we discovered that the lead [of 2020] had disappeared."

Elliott essentially says, they didn't know who would be hit hard. That clears the first point that people debated, that "it was known" that it would hit the low rake cars. Mercedes technical director says, they didn't know who would be hit hard. As Mercedes proved thorugh the season, once they started developing the car in the right direction, the car was moving forward in performance, which shows, it wasn't as much the "low rake cars were hit hard".

It's probably safe to assume, Mercedes either started development work of W12 in different a direction while the full scale of changes for 2021 were not yet published and then had to abort it to move in a different direction. The other aspect probably was, they would have thought they had enough in hand from the W11 car and were confident of W12 carrying over a lot of that, which proved otherwise in testing. As the season showed, they could develop the W12 to overcome the deficit they had in the beginning, which shows, it wasn't so much "low rake" cars were affected. In the hindsight, if Mercedes would have got their decision making right in terms of developing directions for the car, W12 would probably have been every bit as dominant as W11 was.
Take a look on Aston Martin. I think nothing more has to be said.

Aston ended the year 2020 the third best car and snip-snip! To the floor and they begin 2021 tailing the mid-field. Aston's less heeled rivals Toro Rosso, Sauber, Williams all made more progress than them.

Yea, and I think that shows how much they(Merc) were able to claw back over the course of the season because of there much deeper understanding of the low rake concept, and Prowess of their staff.

I was impressed with how much rake the car ended up with even though the changes were minimal to the aero package. Top effort from the engineers and designers. I imagine they might have learned a lot this year that is applicable to all future years because it was such a deep dive experiment on learning the car.

I'm not so sure about this part.
In 2020, Mercedes found big aerodynamic gains from sweeping the rear suspension very far back, by mounting the forward lower wishbone into the crash structure rather than the gearbox, as is conventional. This was a feature copied by Red Bull on their ’21 car. Mercedes went even further on their own ‘21 car, the W12.

The lower wishbone links were no longer conjoined but separate. This allowed the rear link to be mounted even further back and slightly higher, causing less disturbance to the airflow through the bodywork coke bottle section. It helped in trying to reclaim the rear downforce lost to the regulations.
The carbon fiber gearbox carrier, that the suspension mounts to was frozen at the first race of last year. It would have cost 2 tokens to change it for this year. The only thing Merc could have done and not spent tokens is redesign the rear suspension members, and fairings.

But Merc/Hamilton are not angry with Verstappen they are angry with the officials.
NO One, Merc, Hamilton, most fans, blame or dislike max/RBR because of him finishing in front, he did what he was supposed to do and what Hamilton or any other driver would do.
Why do so many people not apricate this?
When arguing with a fool, be sure the other person is not doing the same thing.

Something wrong I'm missing, or do you just not like the fact that they are video conferencing/chatting?

No, it's okay, I just wanted to look at the details of the new motor.
