Tost anticipates “toughest year” for budget cap in 2022

9th January 2022, 0:01 | Written by Will Wood

In the round-up: AlphaTauri team principal Franz Tost says 2022 will be the “toughest year” that the team will face with increased budget cap restrictions.

As Red Bull’s sister team, AlphaTauri have been able to buy parts directly from their stablemates, including two year old gearboxes and rear suspension during the 2021 season. Tost says that buying additional parts this year will create problems with the reduced cap.

“[This] year will become for us, I think, the toughest year regarding the cost cap,” said Tost.

“[In 2021] we are far below the cost cap. That’s not a problem. But [2022] is $140 million, and buying new parts from Red Bull technology brings us as well to the limit. And therefore, we must calculate from the very beginning onwards quite well, because this situation could bring us in some difficulty.”

What AlphaTauri is taking from Red Bull for 2022

[ ..... ]

For last year’s successful AlphaTauri AT02, the team opted not to take the 2020-specification Red Bull gearbox and rear suspension despite the fact it was available without token spend.
This was based on the desire to continue down a path it felt better suited its car and stick with its 2019 Red Bull-based rear end.

For 2022, it will lean on Red Bull’s ’22 designs in that area. It will have the option to expand on this for the 2023 car.

“We’ll take the gearbox, hydraulics and rear suspension from the 2022 Red Bull,” said technical director Jody Egginton.

“They’ve committed to building the same parts for both teams, as the regulations insist.

“The subtle difference is that all the aero surfaces on the suspension, the cladding, have to be team-specific. But the mechanical bits will be Red Bull’s.

“The front the car will all be our own. Over the last three years we’ve sort of done mix and match. Sometimes we’ve taken more, in the first year of synergy [2019] we took pretty much all of the front suspension, then we took the inboard [suspension parts] and then in the final year we mixed it up.

thanks, this just missed my attention. getting the same parts from the same year is a huge step forward. i'm curious if they'll also get or share the updates as well.
