Things sound fairly grounded yet optimistic. Interesting that they aren’t firing up the new engine yet.

According to Sky F1, they’re hearing a lot of noises out of the Ferrari camp about their challenger for next year. Supposedly, Ferrari are very pleased with the gains they are making on their engine, they believe they will be taking a good step forward to being much closer to Honda and Mercedes Power. They also believe their car concept is aggressive and impressing with what they’re seeing.

I remember hearing optimistic things for 2016 and 2017 too. 2016 the car was a dog. 2017 sure it was good and showed some innovative designs, including the high sidepods which I think we copied by every team by the end?

Butttt, neither year were particularly good. I’ll believe it when I see it on track.

FWIW, Sky F1 have heard noises out of the Mercedes camp that they’re pleased with how their ‘22 challenger is looking. The noise out of Ferrari are loudest at the moment though.

I doubt ferrari will challenge they have not built good chassis since 2018.. the 2019 car had the most powerful engine in f1 history but had low quality chassis and aero and the car was a dog

I know what you’re talking about. But I do think things have changed since 2017-2019. They had outdated technology sim / aero development then, and reportedly some poor correlation. Last year, after some changes, they’ve constantly stepped forwards. They now have very modern simulator tools, maybe the Leading ones in the business. I think based on recent history (18 months) they are proving they are a team on the up.

I still think if they are in a tight title fight, they will get thoroughly beat in the pit wall game though. I’d say the pecking order in that area in the sharp end of the grid is #1 RBR #2 MCS. MCS made Ferrari look easy and clearly RBR are the very best at the moment on the strategy. I think if Ferrari are going to win a title in this era, it will be with the outright best car or best reliability.

I'd argue Mercedes, Honda (uhh, Red Bull?) and Renault would all be echoing similar statements about the gains they're making back on their Power Units, despite the likely loss of overall performance due to the Ethanol Blends being required.

... and further to that, most teams you'd imagine would be making big gains on their car concepts, being a completely new rule change for everyone, unsurprising.

At least there is some cautious words of optimism from Ferrari... just hope we can hit the ground running like we sort of did in 2017/2018...

True. They know this also, surely. And yet they still make noises. Perhaps these noises mean, all teams had difficulties grasping ways to find performance in less obvious ways, and perhaps some teams have found something that they not only recognise has found them good performance gains, but may not be obvious or even intuitive to unlock and think of.

Some might be to do with engine too; have they restored or exceeded the power they had despite the performance setback with the mandated 10% ethanol in fuel?

I wonder how much tyres are going to play a role in the winning package next year. We’ve seen before that winning aero (2013 mercedes) doesn’t mean you can win a marathon despite great sprint speed. We’ve seen engine (2019 Ferrari) prove that it cannot carry a slow car fast enough to dominate with power. Tyre deg, race pace, all key. We have the biggest change in tyres in a long time with these new wheels and tyre profile. Which chassis will work them the best? Maybe they will be winning the races despite not securing the outright fastest aero or most powerful engine.

Rather than hit the ground running, I think the most Important thing is for the team to only go forwards once they hit the ground As 2017\2018 proved.

Since livery is the first thing we will see next month, I’d really like to see a classy iconic Ferrari livery without the ugly winnow logos on it, and I do miss the glossy finish. And I’ve wondered, why don’t they incorporate that iconic ‘Ferrari’ font logo on the car somewhere?

Don’t know if its “ultra modern” but its fair to assume Ferrari’s facilities are just as good as Mercedes and Red Bull if that’s what you’re asking.

Ferrari does have the newest, most advanced simulator on the grid right now as well.
