Why Pirelli’s emergency F1 fixed supply rule looks set to stay

Formula 1 tyre supplier Pirelli is sceptical that teams will go back to having a free choice of compounds for each race weekend,
with the supply choices to be fixed again for 2022.

Norman, who thanked Domenicali and his predecessor Chase Carey for their support, has yet to confirm what her future plans are.

“I have completed what I set out to do at F1, and it’s time for my next challenge,” she said.

“It’s been an honour and great privilege to have been part of the leadership team transforming this world class, unique sport into the modern sports and entertainment company it is today.

“I’ve relished the challenge of building the team and the business from the ground up.”

F1 returns to old format: Friday practice sessions back to 90 minutes

Before the start of the 2021 season, the FIA announced that Friday free practice sessions would no longer be ninety minutes, but sixty minutes. This will be reversed in the new season.

The new sporting regulations of 2022 state that the first and second free practice sessions on Friday will again last an hour and a half, as we are used to from previous years. The third free practice on Saturday will remain unchanged, as it has always lasted sixty minutes.

Three days of F1

Another change to the format is the media days. Last year's Formula One weekend still lasted four days, because media and sports activities were scheduled on the Thursday. In 2022, this will be reversed to three days. However, the teams will have the opportunity to organize something themselves, but the official press conference will no longer take place.

Yes! I can imagine. The ‘Official Press Conference’ has to have been one Hell of a Burden for the past eight years and nothing like the cake-walk everyone thinks!
You know..! I’ll Bet toots is glad it’s all over!

It’s not about that… Not having any official activities in Thursday, implies that not only the driver’s, but more importantly the media and some team members are allowed one more day in between races… With 23 races in the calendar, that extra day will be important to get some rest (while also help with lowering costs for those involved).

Top ten from F1 qualifying also have free tire choice in 2022
Feb 2 2022 17:48

The Formula 1 drivers who manage to advance to Q3 in qualifying will no longer be obliged to start the race in 2022
on the tire with which they set their best time in Q2.

Drivers will receive a grid penalty after five reprimands in 2022

A Formula One driver will receive a ten-place penalty starting in 2022 when he has had five reprimands.
This is a change from previous years, as then a driver already received the penalty at three reprimands.

\:D/ Increase the number of sprints from the table

McLaren and six other teams consistently reject the softening of the cost cap through the back door. Haas' proposal to give all teams an extra $2.65 million was not well received by the top teams. "The only thing that interests them is to protect the advantage over the small teams as much as possible. That can only be done with a higher budget cap," Steiner notes.

Now F1 boss Stefano Domenicali's plan to double the number of sprints to six has apparently died.
A few days ago, teams were informed that there would be a maximum of three mini-races on the 2022 calendar
- maybe even fewer.

It is not yet clear which Grand Prix weekends the sprints will be part of.

A maximum of three sprint races

There is no solution to the dispute about the planned doubling of the sprint races. The top teams have called for an increase in the cost cap. The small teams refused. Even extra revenue didn't change the big teams' minds. That is why there will again be a maximum of three sprint races in 2022.

But, without the support of Red Bull, Mercedes and Ferrari, there remains a chance
that F1 could have to abandon the sprint race idea completely.

not that surprising. He's employed by Liberty, a sprintrace gives you three days of television interesting stuff instead of two. Four more sprints, is four days, that equals two whole races, all for free.

Why would the teams want more sprint races? It's a cost to them with little benefit. Liberty told the teams that there was more exposure due to the sprint races, meaning more potential income generation. Well that's great, but if you're a team that has had its budget cut significantly, why do you care about more income? You can't spend it on anything F1-related if you're already at the budget limit. Sure, the teams' parent companies can take some extra money, but the big winner is Liberty. And it's thus no surprise they want more sprints. They are the only real winners.

The other side of the same token is crash damage and engine use for the same exposure. Would there be a different audience from the usual qualli watchers? doubtful.

On Sprint races and the F1 weekend.

I think 3 days is plenty. Over a season, that is like 3 weeks more rest that gets spread out for the teams.

And the Sprint could just replace Q1.

Q1 - 30-minute Sprint: Top 5 drivers in the WDC standing are given a forced Bye and move to Q2 (first race of season would use current Q1 and not have a Sprint). Grid set by WDC position. Awards (6) points for first, (4) points for second, (2) points for 3rd. Top 10 pass to Q2.

Q2 - 15-minute - As now. Top 10 pass to Q3.

Q3 - 10-minute - As now.

EZPZ, and prevents runaway points with the forced bye. Also allows the switch to basic Q1 if weather causes issues, and we have a Sunday morning qualifying session.
