Other Red Bull engine plan: Honda longer involved in F1 project

27 Jan. 2022 11:00
Honda will remain involved in Formula 1 and Red Bull's engine project in the background for much longer than previously communicated.
Helmut Marko reveals that all engines up to and including the 2025 F1 season will come from Japan.
Related to this, Red Bull is not yet taking over the intellectual property of the engine from Honda, as stated in the first plan.

[ ....... ]

Helmut Marko:
"In the course of our successes, there has been a certain rethink among the Japanese. Then came the realization that they can use all the knowledge about the batteries in F1 for their electrification of the road cars.
Initially, the intention was that Honda would only deliver our engines for 2022, but it has now been decided that this will last until 2025. This is of course a huge advantage for us and means that we only have to do the fine tuning and calibrations ourselves."

Great to hear! I wonder what it means for the branding situation? Any chance for the Honda motor home?

It would be nice to see Honda logos at least on the nosecone and engine cover, as a customer power unit relationship.

Verstappen's helmet was revealed without any Honda logos, but I guess that can be changed easily.

It is curious that Marko notes RB powertrains will be doing their own engine mapping...? :?:

For now, Red Bull is the engine supplier on the entry list: https://www.fia.com/events/fia-formula- ... ship-entry

"The engine will be branded as a Red Bull engine," Horner confirmed, but said that Honda's presence is likely to be acknowledged.

"We still have an affiliation of branding which will be announced later in the season. They won't be totally invisible."

When Horner talks of an 'affiliation' later in the season, he probably means a red & white Suzuka livery? :?:

Will they be able to develop without the limits of a cost cap until they confirm their plans for 2025/2026?

Think carry out as much work as possible on the car that could be interpreted as "engine"

Could be seen als a master stroke by Honda. Forcing a freeze, than stay as a supplier for 4 years with the best engine.

Some food for thought. In a news article today the European sales figures were published and what I didn’t knew, relatively, how small of a brand Honda is on the European car market. “Only” 68.000 cars sold in 2021, not in the top 25 brands. Of course, their image is a lot wider, here mostly known for their motorbikes of course.

I have been in Germany in for 2 weeks a few years ago. All that 2 weeks long I drove a civic but I almost couldn't see another one. I figured out that only brands you can see around are hyundai and mazda which are manufactured out of europe. Especially I saw many mazda and mx5. Except this two brand, I think, they miss too much.

Hyundai is manufactired outside of Europe?
Hyundai Motor is committed to the European market and its customers. Today, more than 90% of all Hyundai vehicles sold in Europe are designed, engineered, produced and tested here.

Not nearly. If you don't mean they are manufactured outside of Europe, then what?
