Norbert Haug Mclaren employee

Post

Am I mistaking, or is Norbert Haug president of all Mercedes-Benz motorsport activities?

In most of his interviews it actually looks like he is a Mclaren employee.

Here's a recent Chinese GP preview quote from NH;
Norbert Haug, Mercedes-Benz Motorsport Vice-President
“Last year, Lewis drove an excellent race on this challenging circuit and won. For this year’s Chinese Grand Prix, it has to be our target to start further up the grid than was the case in the first two grands prix. Those two races showed that points-finishes or even podiums were possible, even when the basic speed was not good enough. The team has developed further technical and aerodynamic improvements which should enable us to make another small step forward.”
Mclaren may be Mercedes' biggest client but shouldn't he be a little more impartial ?

Merc actually owns part of the team... FIF1 & Brawn are only customers.

Thanks. I just read that Merc owns up to 40% and that there were talks about buying the entire team a few years ago. I should have used google a bit better before polluting this forum.

In fact, Merc is the largest shareholder in McLaren with a 40% holding, followed by Bahrain Mutalakat Holding Company (a holding company of Bahrain kingdom) at 30%, and Ron Dennis and TAG at 15% each.

Merc consider McLaren their works team. It remains to be seen how long that will last if the screw up frequency remanins at an unprecedented level.

we could see Brawn fill that spot if Mclaren continue. I'm sure the MPHE group would love to have Brawn on the pit wall in 2010. He's already showed the potential of the new powerplant with a good car.

I'm not sure it's quite that simple McLaren are seen as the prestige sports arm of mercedes (even more so that AMG). They are due to release a new car later this year to take on Ferrari http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsArtic ... rs/239198/ and to try and rival them with a more commercial sports car. So I think that a few bad races and some controversy which will I'm sure soon be forgotten is unlikely to move their strategy that quickly. Also their is the old adage that no publicity is bad publicity and although they're not winning races they are getting far more column inches than the likes of BMW and Renault are at the moment. It may not be the publicity that they wan but everyone is talking about them still.......

There was a period of time where Mclaren had a corker of a car and the Mercedes engines were exploding left right and center as they tried to equal the Ferraris during MS's dominance.

Now that they have their engine worked out, I'm sure Mclaren will get a bit of slack as they always come back around.

I don't see this falling apart like the BMW/Williams breakup. Mercedes needs a team with Pedigree to stay in the sport, and I can't see another team, except maybe Williams, and that's a stretch, being up for the task.

Makes me think. Imagine Mclaren are the also rans all year. Mercedes takes Lewis and goes to Williams, dumping Nakajima, keeping Rosberg, and pumping Sir Frank up with the funds he so justly deserves in my opinion.

I don't think haug would take merc to brawn (for good) and leave mcl. Simply because mcl is a topteam. Brawn will drop back down the grid in the next couple of years. + mcl has already a 15 year relationship with merc and merc holds 40% shares with a clear view on increasing it in the future.

good grief how fickle people are.
mercedes go to brawn and dump mclaren?
for goodness sakes....brawn have had 16 months with 2 wind tunnels to get their car as quick as it is....lets see if they are pace setters next year before we hail them as the next coming...somehow i dont see them pulling the same trick two years running.

Speak for yourself. Some believed in the 2009 honda that turned out to be Brawn at the end  Also that their pace during their first tests was genuine and not a cheap publicity stunt.

So apparently there is some tension. I wonder is this really an "image" problems or McLaren road-car project?
