The power of this site, and the internetz in general.

Post

Sorry for the internetz thing. I can't help calling them that 8)

I find what I am about to tell you awe inspiring.

Just so I don't oust who I talked to, I will talk in vague terms.

A couple of years ago I was building something, with something.

While building the thing, I crushed the tip of my finger nearly clean off. By tip, I mean the whole last segment where the fingernail is.

Good thing is everything was put back together, and even though it's mildly funny-looking compared to the other, it's better to the point that even my guitar playing didn't suffer.

Point is, an off the wall comment in this forum randomly put one of the designers/engineers of the something that caused me so much pain and suffering in contact with me.

The injury, by the way, was entirely my fault, but it was inexperience with the something that led to the injury.

The employee didn't know when he responded to me that I was injured, he just wanted to know what I thought about the machines.

I explained that a relatively small inexpensive fix, that other brands of the same kind of something have, would have kept me and other inexperienced workers from getting this relatively common and horrific injury.

They are looking at this solution, and considering it as something serious to implement to the something.

He didn't know at the time he contacted me that I was injured by the hand of his something.

So in closing if you managed to read this far, this site might help directly keep people using pens, playing guitars, and keeping safe in a dangerous world.

Did he ask about your drinking habits before operating the machinery?

I'm glad that others may be saved your trauma, as I have lost the tip of my finger as well to a machine that was being operated by a 20yr journeyman, who was operating it backwards!

Fortunately, it healed well, but it also shredded the C5,6,7,8 and T1 nerves in my brachial plexus... In other words, I get to babysit a lightning bolt that resides between my small finger and my elbow for the rest of my life due to his incompetence.

This is why project managers and outside salesmen should NEVER jump in to lend a hand on the jobsite!

I was just overly confident. Running my first big crew, comfortable for the 1st time on a Job site in a long time. Like on top of --- more then everyone around me comfortable. :)

Always fear, then respect heavy equipment.

In hindsight, I was only injured because I let it happen.

Hey, great, Giblet.

Conceptual, is great to see your name in the front page list.

I'm not sure how this sounds in english, but I've heard some times the spanish version of "you know, after you're 40, the day you wake up and nothing hurts, it's because you're dead" and, yes, it's true.

I was never injure using a machine but i always get warned not to get too comfortable or confident, that's when the accidents happen. One time i was using a drill press i decided not to wear protective eye wear. It just so happened that the drill bit snagged and exploded in the steel stock i was boring. The shards went flying in my face, :P a big chunk cut my eyebrow, from then i never took chances, i could of lost an eye back then. :wtf:

Well sort of, but he is in constant pain, and has to wear custom rubber thimbles to play.

I was really lucky. The main sensory nerve in your index finger runs around the outside, on the thumb side. M fingertip was hanging on by a little piece of skin and nerve. If I had lost that nerve, I would not be able to feel if the finger is actually touching anything or not :)

During the healing process, as I know I have an addictive personality, I avoided painkillers, and wished for a few months I _had_ severed the nerves.
