With influx of newer people into this space due to DTS, you are likely to get these kinds of responses. People would automaticlly assume that a more complex looking car is a faster car, failing to realize that aerodynamics is much more complex than that.

As with everything, newer people will have to go through a learning curve and all you can do is to help them by pointing out these kinds of things (complexity of it aerodynamics etc.).

You make a good point but I worked for 35 years in University research departments. Lots of very smart people were guilty of "inside the box" thinking and sometimes found it difficult to step back and rethink the bigger picture for a new/radical & better solution.
Of the current crop of F1 cars Ferrari seem to have the most "outside the box" package, but will it be fast? First timings I've seen suggest it might be but it is very early days.

The Race: Palmer

Palmer has also had a look at some of the other cars out on track, including Max Verstappen's RB18...
"As for the Red Bull, it looks heavy on fuel. The handling looks fine, the corner fazes all look fine it's just fractionally behind time-wise so that's the hallmark of a heavier car.
"The McLaren looks sharp on corner entry, whilst other cars looks to be understeering more into Turn 6 Lando looked like he was able to position his car well.
"Latifi looks like he's not fully confident just yet, especially in the high-speed corners."

This is really obvious, anyway, `a lot of smart people` have gone wrong multiple times, so it's not safe to assume that they will always produce the optimal result only because they're smart.

its really difficult, looks clean, a bit imature in some areas, sidepod shoulder others exploited more, doesnt feature a doubble tray, the floor/front diffuser inlet seems more basic, whereas the floor side edge seem pretty developed, the front suspension if it works mechanically also, seem pretty good for feeding clean air, so a very good basis to work from and add the other details if it will work on this car offcourse. Im most interested in the ontrack sigthings, and they seem positive so far, im really hoping it has a stronger frontend

I’d be really surprised if James has played anything safe- we did that in 2014 and I remember Jenson Button saying we will go for a car that works out of the box and can bolt on downforce - but we were trounced by Mercedes and Red Bull.

Listening to his launch day interviews and some talk since, he felt he hasn’t seen anything that he and the team “had missed”, so I’m hoping that any areas where we appear minimalist are because anything extra isn’t necessary.

That being said, seeing the way we’ve operated in recent years since Seidl and Key joined, we’ve always been patient in ramping up performance and we are always careful to understand the base level, so I wouldn’t be surprised if we validate the key concepts this week and add more parts and detail in Bahrain knowing us.

Such an exciting time of year but also scary when you’re looking at the potential for another team to be runaway leaders!!
