Mercedes W13

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Not sure if anyone saw this. Unreal closeups of the w13 and the infinite curves.

I think this is the best looking car seen so far under these new regs. Simple forms and without the bulk and ugly addenda that the RB18 has.

No doubt it's going to change notably for the next test and the first race, but I hope it doesn't become an ugly car. Having said that, if it's a winner it can be as ugly as sin, just that a pretty winner would be better.

Their willingness to let the camera get this close is a clear signal the car is going to change substantially between now and the first race.
Seeing from their recent trend, basically from 2018 onward, they've done this open reveal pretty much throughout the years. I saw a tweet somewhere, they'll bring minor changes to Bahrain.

Could you link the source please? Michael Schmidt from AMuS says they'll bring "half a new car" to Bahrain, and he's been very close to the team for years...

Sacry isn't it... I have never seen such photos of new car especially with new regulations

some more intimate angles with the W13. The studio lighting highlights the angular detail of the body work :)

The nose does look different with more sharper edges or is that the lighting?

Most outlets (AMuS, Motorsport, Smilex Tech) are now quoting 'major changes' to the Merc, particularly around the sidepods.

I think they're the same. Its a combination of the lighting and the focal length of the lens. The longer range and focal length a lens is, the more 'flat' the subject looks. In the close up studio shots, the car looks 'longer' because of the type of lens and relative distance the photographer is.

The first main plane is most definitely lower, under the nose in the studio shot

The noses are very different, the tip alone - look at the logo as a reference.

I can only echo AeroDynamic's comments, it's the same car, but the viewing angle, lens and lighting is different.

Some of you are seeing ghost I think  . There's no difference in the noses. The perspective in the studio shot as well as the differences in lighting, shadows, etc has skewed the image significantly. You would have to believe they also straightened the monocoque if you ignore that.

How is car length going to affect W13 compared to 2014 - 2021?

Mercedes have many years of experience with low rake cars so will have an advantage in that area but how much of their advantage has gone away by making all car lengths the same?

As far as I know it was the long wheel base that gave them a lot of superiority in tyre wear etc

After Sauber and Mclaren, the Mercedes W13 is the closest car t the weight limit. Only 3,5-4 kg over the limit. Ferrari is between 5-10 kg over the limit while the Red Bull is over 10 kg. They talk about a consensus of a maximul 5 kg limit over the limit in Bahrain between the FIA and the teams. It is not fair! I hope that they dont let Newey get away with this. They should stick to the limit and force Red Bull to revise the weight plan and make Red Bull waste some resources on coming to the limit. They may alter some things with the distribution of the weight and it is very important to derail Red Bull as much as they can.
