Mercedes W13

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Why doesn't any team use sidepods on the sides of the floor, having them completely separated from the tub, leaving the space between as a direct channel to the diffuser?

Weight distribution?

Because of the legality boxes. They don’t reach far enough for that. You are restricted to having them in the traditional place. More or less. A pencil is allowed. If you can get the hot parts cooled sufficiently.
Ok, makes sense!
Have to check again the legality boxes.

Thanks!

This. There are examples of F2000 cars with these though. They sit inline of the wheels.
Was that my idea!

Would separate the dirty air from the wheels wake from the clean air to the diffuser

Are there photos of this? Most of the radiator is beside the survival cell/cockpit, which is a spec dimension. They can't cut into it to make space for radiators.

Really no idea on where they're going...usually Giorgio Terruzzi has a lot of info, so cannot be just a "speculation" but 2022 rules are "quite" clear on some matters...just for fun, I share here another car without side pods, the Brabham BT46B. Perfect, but soon illegal: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JA-Du-Qgblk

Something from a source I trust about the innovation inbound on the W13.

They can. There are plenty of pics in the previous pages. Yes the last Mercedes cars have their radiators deeply recessed inside the tub sides, not a new trick per se (and Renault, RB and Williams also did this), but Merc took this to the next level especially this year.

So Merc can do that and have "no sidepods" IMO, thanks to a Williams-style cooling layout for example. So if they split their lateral rads between sidepods and centerline, they can have even tinier sidepods

Scarbs posted that in Feb 16, for the Alpine, as a joke.

I'm aware, but given the topic of the conversation, it's not a bad visualization overall.

How exactly would you control tyre wake in an era with no no out-wash FW, no bargeboards... and no sidepods?

Not sure where this rumour came from... but I'm not buying it

It's just a baseless rumor. There won't be such a thing. They said it'd be half a new car, which means general upgrades/refinements on the current package. It's just rumor.

Now, am I Surprised Mercedes haven’t shown their hand like some teams? No.

But I think expectations should be tempered. If the downwash bodywork looks more mean and aggressive, that would be a great reveal. If the first iteration was some sort of red herring to throw the others off and chase something meaningless.. that would be epic.
