McLaren MCL36

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

When in doubt, make it double size 🙂 But indeed this is very crudely made. Hopefully it survives trough the weekend and doesnt burst in between the seems.
If i would get the money to start my own F1 team, i would revive Arrows

I wonder if they have made this single large shroud and they will use volume spacers inside to work out the optimal cooling volume then engineer a weight optimised version from there.

Looks like they merged that and the previous carbon duct over the top together, wonder if the carbon fibre one was getting too warm and deforming?

This is clearly a hastey for-now-solution to get it working this weekend. Hope it allows them to race properly

It's very thin wall titanium, you have to skip and stitch around like that to stop it distorting.

True that, very delicate part to weld, at least they didn't cut it down just to make it look good. =D>

I guess it was welded and shipped before it even cooled down looking at that, given they haven't even run any cleaner over it to take the heat/oxidation marks off, must have been fairly rushed.

So they got Lando to do it instead?
Q: (Stefano Mancini – La Stampa) Kimi, will you help Vettel to win his championship this year?
Kimi Raikkonen: I can only drive one car, obviously.

why would you brush down the owidation. you dont have to make it look pretty.you just have to make it functional

Contaminants like that give crack formation/propagation areas under heat/stress cycling. Probably not much of an issue for a single race weekend though. You usually scrub off that heavy oxidised area and let it reform it's natural oxide layer instead, they're not that bad as you can see from the weld bead - dark blue in places ain't great but it's heavy straw for most of it which is okay usually. But it's usually done as a matter of course.
