Alpine A522

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

I gues they 're in for race setup and tyres rather then qualy. It looks to me that they feel strong

Maybe they are testing if it's faster to turn the engine down and run less cooling (maybe more cornering performance, and less drag).

My Guess is that in the preseason tests they real-time gauged the heat requirements of the PU. They used that information to start scaling back the vents. Also with the the new sidepods, the vents over the sidepods are a better choice to direct that heat through that area.

I am happy, I am happy as we didn't know where we were.
Surprise to be both fighting for Q3
Now is time to push new parts and developrment on next races
To close the gap to the liders that it is a bit more of 1 sec in qualy
I felt confortable during the 3 Q runs, the last one no so happy
But the weekend has been in general good
And tomorrow the degradation of the Tyres is the clue
We are going to have to be careful with the planning and strategy
As it is an incognita as no body has done the 52 laps that there are tomorrow on race
And also what kind of Tyres you choose would be important as there are going to be different strategies
And let's see who gets the right choice and strategy

More or less he says that

Slightly off topic but has anyone posted any discussion anywhere that compares Renault PU performance to the others? I see a lot of talk about Ferrari vs Merc/Honda and no mention of Renault. I asked in the engine thread as well.

Was the car just setup to low downforce? That might explain Alonso's horrible tire wear.

I haven't but I believe that talk is more about testosterone than fact.

I saw Alonso hit 320kph on a 2nd lap after a tire change but after a couple of laps of that he went back to coming off the throttle at around 294, coasting then braking.

My guess is they lack DF for aero reasons like porpoising or just lack it rather that they're choosing not to run DF for PU reasons.

Alonso said tyre degradation was huge problem, and battles in first stint destroyed his tyres, what was reason of degradation he didn't say.
