Red Bull RB18

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Car is very overweight. More laptime to come if they can put it on a diet. Less Red Bull, more protein shakes.

Does anyone have any actual evidence of this or is it just continued rumor/speculation? I keep seeing a lot of the latter but no numbers.....

I thought one rumor from last night was that RBR had shaved off 7-10kg off the car since the last test in Bahrain, then someone started saying they were 20kg overweight here before so now they are 10kg. It does feel like the numbers are bouncing around on RBR weight.

This new rear wing seem to have slipped by...

The spoon starts off early and is more aggressive and there's a curvature in the outer edges.

For comparison, less spoon and flat outer edges.

Looks lower downforce to me.

There are a couple of strange looking scoops in there, next to the chassis. They look like air inlets?
Also very interesting detailing of the strakes!

Given how massively RB is losing in braking zones to Ferrari, shaving 5-10kg can give good plus simply by improving braking dynamic

If you’ve not read it, definitely worth a read, Mark Hughes provides a detailed account and analysis comparing Leclerc’s and Verstappen’s Bahrain Q3 laps.

So the two retirements within a lap of each other. Seems like Hydraulics overcooled did'nt it due to too much air into the radiators causing battery and gearbox overheating after fliuds stopped flowing pretty much. Anyone with previous motorsport experience can confirm this.

Redbull has a risk of overheating. The area under the oracle logo will be fried quite often.
They are pushing the limits for sure. Normally the radiator is tilted forward in the sidepods, with the sidepod having reasonable volume for other equipment and for hot air to flow around and out.
This design is as if all the equipment was crammed together then they scalloped that volume that's normally before the radiators.
Fastest car on the grid for sure, based on the floor, the floor vortex generator end plates, the sidepod wing, the undercut, the beam wing, the diffuser, the rear brake ducts... But most reliable and driveable? I think that is the bigger mystery with this machine.
The Mercedes car appears more conservative, but it has equally small sidepods, but most of all the design seems more robust and it just appears to be less aero sensitive.
This indeed is a very extreme and precise design. Nothing was spared. Even the front wheel hub and pull rods are extremely clean and light and low drag.
Without trying to sound facetious, what experience are you basing your opinion on?
It's all based on the ellipse.
  What's that?
Car is clearly unreliable. So is Alpha Tauri. Systems packaging could be too tight. Maybe with moving the electronics outside of the side pods, they do'nt get as much cooling as they need?
For Sure!!

According to Red Bull it could be a fuel pump issue on both cars. Interesting since the fuel pump is now an FIA standard part.

RB combine flexures with multilink on the front axle, so steering force is acting against suspension arm spring force to some degree. Whether or not this could have contributed to today's steering issues, I don't know.

I suspect it might have overheated when the tank was no longer full of fuel to cool it.

Wonder if there will be other pump failures on other cars. Wasnt Charles saying he had issues on last lap? (from what someone posted on here)

Wonder if the FIA will step in and sort issues with pumps.
