Mercedes W13

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

W13 floor
The most important detail to note on the floor occurs just in front of the number 8. It hasn’t changed.

The new beam wing is why they can run the lower downforce rear wing (DF creation moved from high level to low level). It will be interesting to see if the increased efforts of the beam wing can make the floor work better.

The machine learning posts have been moved to a new thread.
Such a specialist topic deserves its own place here.

Wow! Look at how much they are trying to outwash at the tunnel exits!!!

Much better to look at

I think this outwash appearance in the photo is an illusion. The tunnels have a converging geometry ahead of the apparent outwash section and then perspective kicks in and amplifies this directional difference, leading to an outwash illusion.

However, the absolute last segment and the curve between side walls and top surface look to have a clever kick to try and induce outwash effect. As far as I know, side walls can't form outwash geometry per rules.
And they call it a stall. A STALL!

The "skate" has been on the Merc floor since forever.

I think that's just a general outward floor flick. It's not as far rearward as other cars where most of the floor flex it, I'm also not sure it's metallic.

That is not a skate. It's just the shape of their floor.

That is not a Skate

The Skate should touch the ground when the car bottoms, skate along the ground (like ice skating boots), largely preventing the car floor from touching the ground and/or the plank wearing out.

The skate needs to be a metal of some sort as it will wear out
One day AI might be able to fix the W13 zero pod concept !

Yes, it is a metal plate. As I said, I am literally conveying a message, but as I said, you're free to tell the team(s) they're wrong.

Maybe you guys are just not seeing it. It's a small ... skate, literally. Look at other angles maybe and you can't miss it then.

One reason I don’t think this is a skate is because the rear section curves out until it’s almost perpendicular to the direction of travel and that would cause a lot of wear over a race weekend. RB’s skate is pretty much parallel with the direction of travel. Secondly we don’t see the W13 spark from the rear of the floor like the RB does.

Re: Mercedes W13

I have now studied pictures of the last races. Nowhere was this skate to be seen below the underbody.
So this can only mean it IS not below the underbody and can't have the function of a skate either.
