Mercedes W13

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Good spot!

It's more clear from this angle, how the elements bend forward and then join the endplate:

Waiting for cries from Horner about it going against the spirit of the rules!

I wonder how this innovation works?

I don't quite understand how these upgrades have managed to reduce the purpoising to this extent. Dare I say it, they look potentially competitive?

Hmm, so no new floor or suspension parts. I guess we can expect the porpoising to continue then.
Yeah exactly what I thought. Rather confused by it.

I didn’t see anyone porpoising

They could have made some cuts here and there on the old floor. I think those are not qualified as an "upgrade". I have no evidence, just guessing.

None of the other cars were purpoising.

The Miami track is super smooth which supports Scarbs theory that the bumps in the track help create the conditions that start off purpoising.

I only got to watch 20 mins or so, but I saw a tiny bit of head bobbing at the end of the straight in Hamilton's car, but nothing like before, and the external shots looked very stable to me. Could've easily been just the bumps in the track. Didn't see the Ferrari do it either (usually among the worst).

Jedhha was also super smooth, but that didnt stop any porpoising... merc were bouncing all over the track

The car is running in a low downforce spec. Rear wing trimmed. Beam wing trimmed. Front wing trimmed. That's why it's not porpoising.

Read the FIA upgrade notes. The first 4 races had a high downforce spec. Miami has low downforce spec.

Generally lower downforce translates to lower purposing. All the cars were running lowish downforce wings

Merc's porpoising problems were much more than just running a lower downforce.
The rule states that you need to only

According to the sporting regulations, all teams are required to submit to the FIA a document that gives the “name and brief description of all major aerodynamic and bodywork components and assemblies” that were not used at the last race and are intended to be run that weekend.

no word about any internal components, and 'major' probably leaves enough wiggle room to not announce all tiny changes to the underside of the floor and or to the suspension.

I am guessing merc has brought some internal suspension changes to the car, which they dont need to delcare in show and tell

I noticed that too and as the other cars had virtually zero purposing, Merc had the most purposing of all the cars again !!!

However purposing was overall reduced by night and day margins.
