You said it yourself. This is a weak front end from your description.
Under a very specific condition. Which can be avoided.

I tend to think this will be another Honda moment for McLaren.
With Honda they stuck doggedly to a design philosophy (minimal side pods) which Honda struggled with (focussed on cooling-reliability instead of performance). They openly ignored Honda requests for design changes.
With RBR, Christian Horner was upfront about giving Honda some design input and building the car around what they required.
Now you have McLaren sticking to a design philosophy (or at least not focussing on a design issue) in the belief that LAN can drive it and they will continue to get faster.
I would have been tempted to develop the car around RIC as he was previously fast in a very fast car.
NOR is faster in the current and previous MCL, however the car still needs to be faster. NOR has not driven a front running car, and you don't know what you don't know.
Yes, I know, this is a simplistic opinion on a much more complicated issue.
RIC was slow in Renault as well. He was only fast at RRB were everything worked in sync with his driving style.
He was not slow in 2020. That's revisionism

He destroyed Ocon for most of the year (with Ocon only looking like he was actually decent by the end of the season), and team principles rated him as 3rd best driver of the year which seems to agree with the impression I had
I think 2020 isn't so interesting because Ocon came back from a sabbatical so not really a great benchmark. Daniel for sure drove well though. 2019 was more impressive because he came into Hulkenberg's team and was beating him regularly by mid season.
A lion must kill its prey.

Aside from the nice livery the pics show new side pod inlets with an undercut which is something mclaren hasn’t had yet this year

Why would they release pictures with the upgraded parts if this is really a special livery launch - something is a little fishy here.

If this is not a bluff, it looks like big changes and I hope they can understand and setup the car optimally very quickly instead of having to wait for a few races.

What does OKX on sidepods mean for the BAT sponsorship? They usually have a grocery store chain for tobacco restricted regions but this time gave it up to another sponsor?

I wouldn't be surprised if a BAT nominated brand are on the sidepods at the weekend and OKX is just for the press release. They always exclude BAT brands from press releases and probably didn't want a blank sidepod.

I remember hearing (probably in the pub, so take with a handful of salt) that Singapore has gotten even stricter with Tobacco branding, not even allowing indirect branding such as a mission winnow or whatever.

New Spec:

Following what we saw in the renders… Most notably, the unique treatment of the T-Tray / Bib are is gone, with a more conventional one in place… The undercut is created by widening of the sidepods, the fact that the packaging allowed for a very slim sidepod design initially means that there was no need to relocate the hardware inside to create it.

You can’t knock the guy. He’s been through the wringer. Up and down the paddock people will have been staring at him, looks of judgement. Got to be hard. I’m bitterly disappointed it didn’t work out but the team gave him ample time. Am also sure he put as much effort in from his side. Sometimes things aren’t meant to be
