And adding 190g after removing 30% of the paint for weight savings is a bit recursive.
Maybe keep the paint, and put additional sponsors there?
It's just going to be used in free practice and as a novelty is a way to get some extra attention in the team and the sponsors on the device.
It's not going to be used come qualifying or the race due to the weight penalty - but if there is some value in the concept perhaps they may become standardised devices in future so no-one would be at a detriment by running them.
Apparently it will be here to stay… And the Team has already installed and tried them in the car in several parts of it according to Craig Scarborough
This supports a claim I made before. McLaren’s priority isn’t anymore to win the F1 championship. The priority is to have commercial success first.
We see teams left and right scraping the paint off their cars to decrease the slightest amount of weight and find pace. Meanwhile, McLaren adds screens to get more money.
Why would McLaren care whether they can become a top team again and make sacrifices to that purpose (with little chance to succeed) if they can just hang around 4th/5th and load up their money trucks. Whether by shifting attention towards other racing categories or by sacrificing sportive advantages to gain financial ones.
I don’t see this at other teams. With Ferrari, Red Bull and Mercedes I feel they are always in it to win it. With McLaren I don’t feel that ever since Ron left. I understand Zak is a commercial guy and he has been installed by the shareholders with the target to increase profits. I believe he is the right guy to do that. But if he is making choices that upset the team’s sportive capabilities, I think for a racing team that is wrong.
I would say that Mclarens priority over the most recent years was to rebuild from scratch. The team was pretty much at rock bottom with performance and finances.
The fact they have been able to return to its current level has been pretty impressive. That's all thanks to Zak Brown, Andrea's Siedl and every one else involved.
They could quite easily have been alongside Williams at the back or even gone completely.
They areva racing team of course they want to win titles, but it's clear the improvements made, just that next step is incredibly difficult when up against the current racing giants of the big 3.
If they Actually cared about performance, they’d have designed the car that both Lando and Daniel have been asking for!

Whatever, it’s not like both current drivers haven’t confirmed my statement.
McLaren have openly admitted to not having the disposable income of the top three(or even AMR). It is one of the reasons they welcomed the CAP, it prevents the richer teams from out spending McLaren by 100M. Financially, they have never filled the Merc void. The CAP just about guarantees they make money and that allows them the ability to pay off debts and retool. Modern F1 insures that McLaren keeps getting stronger financially. I think Zak is doing what he has to do to guarantee the continued existence of McLaren. From a performance perspective, 2022 has exposed cracks in their abilities. It is easy to blame the tools but time will tell if they have other shortcomings. I think that 2022 falls on Keys to figure out what they're missing and correct it going forward.
I think Ferrari can be happy with Binotto and their technical team, they actually challenged RBR this year. Everyone else needs to be asking the tough questions.
