first q2 lap on a used set, if Lando makes it through should have 2 new sets for q3...
They might be saving a new set for the race actually
yeah possible... this is their first time ever doing it.. Mercedes do this all the time, I dont understand why they don't do this more often
It is expected to be a 2 stopper with the harder compounds for the race… So not surprising if they actually save Hards for the race (did they used them at all in Practice?)… Therefore probably coming into Qualifying with one less set than usual.

P7 with Perez penalty… Not too bad all considered… and Alonso to start P14?

Lucky for Lando to enter Q3 and good job for getting 8th as we all know tomorrow he will eat Stroll for breakfast. Alonso has 5 places grid penalty so it's a good start. On another note I have a feeling the team has fully focused onto next years a long time now.

Maybe Lando will even start sixth tomorrow depending on the order of penalties.

P6 with Leclerc and Perez penalty.
As usual for Danny Ric.
Makes me wonder which team-mate paring has the most grid places between them in qualifying over the season

The Aston has been a bad qualifier, on race pace it’s usually level with the Mclaren and Alpines, don’t think it will be that easy

Exactly this. The team mentioned it at 23.30 on the team stream on the McLaren app. The plan from the start was to save an extra set of tyres for the race. I'm not entirely clear on which tyres they have left and which they gave back after practice but F1 usually release a "strategy guide" article before the race which should clear it up.

compared to others, they didn't save any tyres, though. Norris has 2 new sets of hards, 1 set of medium and 3 used softs. Red Bull and Leclerc have another medium on top, but apart from that, it's more or less the same for everyone

Honestly reckon that Palou would have qualified higher then Ricciardo.

Would says he's checked out, but his qualifying has been so poor for so long. Looks like it's Lando vs Alpine again for points.

he looked great in Suzuka. Stronger than Norris even, I would say. But yeah, only a one-off, by the look of it.

here's the full tyre list, btw. Not official yet, but should be accurate

The car was twitchy AF, he nearly lost it twice on his final lap in Q1. So you can’t say he wasn’t giving it everything!

PS, your comments are unfounded, AP was 2 seconds slower that Norris in FP1. Daniel was only 1/2 a second slower than Lando in Q1!

Palou only got a single set of mediums for FP1 while Norris set his time on new softs, so the gap itself is not comparable.

The soft isn’t 2 seconds a lap faster.

Fastest FP1 lap times per tyre:

NOR: 1:39,655 (medium) / 1:37,856 (softs)
PAL: 1:39,911 (medium) / -
