Mercedes W14

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Well to me sidepods from last year weren't infact zeropods either if we speak from physical prospect..
Can everyone just agree that the class of 1969 (and some stragglers over the next handful of seasons) were the last of the true zeropods and move on?
 I don't know who coined that "Zero Pods" name, but I hate it.

That is zeropod.
...in your opinion.
In reality it didn't stop there and the entire flank was wider and blended in that's all. Which you can see clearly on the side by side above shot comparing them.

Apparently Mercedes’ shakedown did not go according to plan.

I know someone there saying they ran all 100km with nothing but some teething adjustments. I suspect at this point a lot of places are just making --- up for clicks.

Russell also said there is a substantial reduction of drag and weight and they will see in testing if everything is correlating in terms of downforce / behavior in the corners / dynamic characteristics (last tweet of this thread) :

I think the “zero-pod” is a bit of an illusion on the W14. The W14 clearly has much larger overall sidepod volume compared to the W13. Look at the mid-section. Zero pod is dead.
Look at the front section of both designs, the W14 is clear smaller in the front.
Is a sidepod only it's inlet?

You know those massive upper ducts they have behind the halo almost feel to me like they're considering basically inverting last years sidepods.
I.E - Take this years inlets and put the bulk at the top and take the hot air through the upper tunnels behind the Halo there whilst tapering the sidepods away completely.....it almost lines up with some of the existing contouring.

These might not be the actual sidepods that we'll see into the season?

Toto has already suggested as much yes. He says they will be revising the sidepods in the early races of '23
