Mercedes W14

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

That's normal for low rev on the V6

he confirms the porpoising isn't caused by the exposed floor surface and the flexing floor, same for sidepods

some here will still say they are the cause
He says he doesn't believe it to be the case and I don't think it really stands as confirmation
same was said by mike eliott so who do we believe?
he said the exposed floor and sidepods aren't causing porpoising
To further back this up, Willem Toet has a good part in this lecture (about 53 minutes in) describing why porpoising occurs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kixMMfEQ-FA&t=3544s

From image 2: They have swapped out the louvres for a smooth panel. Makes sense given the weather & temp. Also note the sidepod with a lot of tape on it at the front. Maybe a breakage?

Good view of the front wing and you can see the extra downwashing vane that kyle mentions in his analysis that is tricky to spot from other angles:

Additionally this angle gives a good look at the mid-wing. It's got a noticeably smaller section than the w13's

Gonna look a mess when put through the wars, there’s no easy way to hide scars without paint, esp if they’re gonna chop & repair her often like last year.

Mid-wing looks swept back a fair bit too.

Serrations to keep the airflow attached when expanding it/changing its direction aggressively

They played around with them at the diffuser in previous regulations set, but usually only ran at tracks where efficiency was less of a concern

For instance Alfa Romeo have a serrated beam wing trailing edge this year for same reason

I'm still convinced that this is not the "final" W14. And Toto Wolff seems to admit that.
Nice touch the tape on the sidepods.

Can anyone speak to or link me to explanations of the mid wing shape? It is more or less unchanged. I am not aero technical. To me it looks underutilized…it seems like there could be so much more done with it? For example if all teams built the merc concept - would all the mid wings look like that due to technical regulations? Or is that really the best shape?
