Mercedes W14

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

The comparison is very accurate. The pics were taken by the same photographer in the same place and in a short amount of time. And obviously the camera angle is near perfect and 100 times bette than the pics you re using.
+ with the fuel tank shape Mercedes has, you cannot technically place the cockpit far rearwards, unless you add 50cm to the car's length or width.
This information is from F1s own website and Marc Hughes :

I checked this to make sure I wasn't mistaken, although I was sure because it was said so many times. The driver's position and sidepods were further back on the Mercedes than on Ferrari and Red Bull. The engine was moved further back especially for this. As I said - was explained 2022 umpteen times by all experts whether Hughes, Piola and how they are called all. And I believe that they know a little more precisely, after all, they are standing next to the cars.
Great find Andi, and it also shows how far back and low the Merc sidepods were last year. They are certainly further up this year in both axes.
Are they though? Ill use this photo from Wogx..

If anything they look marginally further back. After reading the positioning of the sidepods I actually looked back at the 2022 car thread and checked where the other teams side pods began. All of them except Mercedes start infront of the monoque/steering wheel with the exception of Alpine:

Its the same this year, everyones sidepods start inline with the steering wheel/front of Halo:

Again, Mercedes is the odd one out.

Now I know those are just the pre-testing renders for everyone, but it wont be too far off.

I really do wonder why Mercedes pods start so far back. Almost in line of the drivers face

Their 2022 cockpit was already far forward, much further than Ferrari & obviously RB
With their fuel tank shape, it's not easy to have a backward cockpit...

Literally the only credible comparison on legths and cockpit position of 2022 cars. All the renders are so full of bs and intentional geometry changes... How anyone can see Merc with the most rearward cockpit is beyond me

To integrate the mid wing with a decent chord clearly. :)

https://ibb.co/t2FP8DZ - Viewing full size makes it evident.

Not sure if that shows the stays a bit better? I did view it on my phone and can hardly tell, but on laptop it was clear.

Played around with the photo and made it more visible. Could be anything but at least it's more clear now

Those arrows aren’t even aligned on the same reference point of each photograph.

I wasnt interested in the arrows. Merely the side concept of the car.

They start so far back because of the small/zero pod design. To have the mid wing they can't have the side pod starting at the halo or else the mid wing wouldn't be possible. The Mercedes design is about getting more overbody aero which is why I suspect they are supposedly getting big numbers in the wind tunnel but that might also explain why it isn't correlating to the real world. There new front wing endplates, the new brake exhausts ducts around the rear of the front wheel show how they are trying to make back aero with there 2021 philosophy design.

this may be a reach but could they be using the detachable bodywork to change it depending on the race like they do with FW and RW

Could someone be so kind as to clarify what the specific orientation is that the flaps have to connect with the endplate? Kyle made a similar reference in his video, but didn't elaborate. I understand why the cutout was banned, but I just don't understand how Merc's solution circumvents what looked like a pretty clear rule. The flaps connect to the endplate, but the wording made me think that they had to connect to it flushly. What we see is that they clearly stop short. From the side-on, there are no gaps. I think I get that part of the legality, but can't wrap my head around why stopping short and curling up would satisfy the rule.

Is it that the only 2 requirements are connection to the endplate (satisfied with the little struts) and no gaps when viewed side-on? That seems like the only way their solution is legal. Thanks in advance for any clarifications.

I'd wager that it's removable so they can switch out their sidepods more easily at a later date without butchering what's there currently. Perhaps an indication they'll be modifying or even losing the mid-wing?

To m2 seems conclusions are wrong. You should also considera halo and wheel position with respect of front wheels

What is this??? :O
Until a better source confirms it, the article themselves describe what they're doing
Pre-season testing is a classic time for tin foil hat conspiracy theorists
This sort of article is the perfect way to gain a ton of traffic with Merc having suffered last year and with Merc fans particularly worried about similar problems in this pre-season

No idea on the credibility of the source there as it mentions other articles ('The writer') but IF its true, then can effectively write the season off for Mercedes. IF the tub is flexing, that isnt a fix they can bring about very quickly, or cheaply, given that it needs to pass FIA safety tests if the tub is modified. Adding a bit of weight to the suspension arms is relatively easy, even with the carbon structure so wouldnt really worry too much about that,.

The sandbagging idea is pretty funny though. Granted we are never going to see the true performance of ANY/Most teams, until Q3 on Saturday.
