Mercedes W14

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Are those the real upwash effect generated by the new endplates mountings front wing?

Could those 2 channel bath tubes also generate load/downforce (maybe near the car`s CoG or CoP?) in addition to their main cooling function?

Which could be something that RB18 pioneered since Silverstone 2022 update?

It seems that drivers ran without the windshield both in dry and wet conditions at the shakedown adding to my above theory:

And last but not least: how are the rear wing and the beam wing influenced by the hot air coming from the cannon outlets?

could this mean that mercedes can bring some kind of S duct like the ferrari? or they already have vertical inlet and would be hard to do

Any sort of downward turning surface is going to generate some lift but usually the payoff is in using the redirected airflow to power up something like the diffuser or the rear wing far more than any lift generated by the surface.

This upper stay is new? What`s the use of it?

Didn't the AT03 have this first? I seem to recall seeing the cannon/bath tube on the AlphaTauri before last summer.

In theory…
Any downwash created by the upper surface will increase the effective AoA of the rear wing in that location.
If a significant ‘clean’ flow volume is pushed/drawn through the cannon outlets it will have an effect on the beam wing (increasing the flow/pressure on the upper surface), if the flow is very turbulent it will have less effect.
Moving from louvres to a long tubular exit cleans this flow up, most likely.

Yes they launched with it. Alpine might've too.

All and all, after much of observation, to my understanding I believe Merc has too many gimmicks. It's just not too consistent, especially not too elegant compared to RBR's solution. It has too many extreme features which I believe all of them have to work consistently in order for the machine to work as intended.

With all the restrictions and added sensitivity to the current regulations with the extra hurdle of budget cap, chances of it to work properly are very low.

I'm wondering whether Merc has changed the exhaust manifold route with the extra space created by the cannons which could explain why some people are saying the W14 sounds different? This is something they haven't had the luxury to do with such a tightly shrink-wrapped body before. If so, could they potentially release a few more ponies with better exhaust routing? Is this even allowed? :?:

Exhausts are part of the homologation perimeter, as far as I know (ie, frozen).

Post-turbine is free. Pre-Turbine is frozen (manifold etc).

I think they are disigned so wide apart to line up with the Halo's mouting points to minimize turbulent losses from the Halo. Basically it's just generic streamlining IMO
