I think AM was running too much wing, if they had a bit more speed on the straights, they would have been closer to RB as they were the faster on medium turns today or at least what Sky show on the graphics during qualy. But also they deployment is a bit better than the honda engine

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQyK1nw ... gTelemetry

Maybe they have more wing for the tyre management and they are planning on the race more than quali
AM’s strength always been ‘Race Pace’;even last year ,they compromised quali for strong race pace.Team must have taken that direction.
Unfortunately,Lance won’t be of any assistance tomorrow.Alonso has to fight single handedly with Ferrari & Merc boys.

Boys is the first race of the season, Alonso's debut in Aston Martin as first qualifying. In 2010, when he made his Ferrari debut, he often made mistakes and age wasn't to blame. That he has 41 is just an advantage as he stated. Nigel Mansell won a world championship at 39 and at 41 he won a race. Then he also said that he needs time to adapt as happened at the beginning with Alpine. Moreover, he hasn't fought for pole since 2013 if not 2012, so he has lost that coldness of a winner. But I'm convinced he bought it back quickly. Finally, tomorrow could make a mistake, but no one should dare to criticize him.
bruh did you even watch his pole laps in WEC beating his teammates?

If Lawrence Stroll decides to run 7 engines on each car this season, would Mercedes provide him with the engine maps accordingly?

Probably not. They would say 14 too many to make.

I also doubt they would allow that

Think customer teams pay a flat $15m for their engine supply according to what I read about a year ago in the regs.. So if they wanted let's say 12 engines that's probably causing a substantial loss for Merc

Money is no object for Lawrence, what if he is willing to pay more? Anyway engines are outside the budget cap.

Can Mercedes dictate how hard the engines are run?
Are they obligated to replace broken engines, how many ever in a year?

Can you name any of these mistakes?

I've been watching this sport for almost 3 decades and regard Alonso as one of the drivers with the least amount of mistakes; always fast and extracting maximum potential out of the cars, no stupid moves on track, zero lack of motivation.

They can't force Asten to run the PUs less harder than Merc does. Power is measured by a sensor at the flywheel. Merc can't have more without incurring penalties.

I believe the question is: would Merc allow Aston Martin to run higher engine modes than the works team if they wanted to?

I would say given that they're in direct competition, no.

Didn't Williams ask for a higher engine mode to fight for pole at Abu Dhabi in 2014 and request was denied?

Defective PU are replaced for free by Merc. If Merc rule that a PU is still good and Aston want to put an new PU in the car. If that is over and above the alloted number, Aston have to pay almost $3 Million for it.

Would that $3m come from outside the cap? Or is it a performance-related component if they're buying a new one early and therefore inside the cap?

Well, people here are eager to point out the occasions where customer teams ended up higher in the rankings.

In all cases, there was a significant gap. I'd imagine if the customer team is not a threat, full support is a way of learning for the engine supplier as long as costs are covered at least.

What happens if the customer and suplier end up in a tight battle for position in the CWC? Rules are clear, but there's always grey area's or ways to use the rules advantageously.

Not all engines are equal and the manufacturer knows. Theres always a tolerance on any spec and the manufacturer is in the position to choose what parts go in which engine.

All engines are outside the cap

As an Alonso fan, I remeber the 2010 fp3 crash in Monaco, which was costly. But indeed this was rare one and improved his error rate a lot.
