Let’s not get carried away. Red Bull will be the dominant team this season, of that there is no doubt.

Ferrari are going to be playing catch up all season, and RB always have better in season dev, therefore the gap may even grow.

That being said I’m not entirely pessimistic. I actually think the fact that the car is so aerodynamically efficient is a big bonus, Ferrari can afford to go towards more DF and still achieve good speed which was the Achilles heel last year.

The concern is the mechanical set up. Really feel that RB has such an edge in this department that the tyre deg maybe the deciding factor for the majority of the season and if Ferrari can’t get parity on the tyre deg then there’s little hope of pushing RB.

Anyone seen what upgrades are planned for Jeddah? I’m guessing the single pylon RW will make an appearance in FP1 again

Don't forget RB has aero penalty. Hopefully it's the reverse this time, Ferrari in on the back foot at the beginning of the season and they will do better in season development and are highly competitive in the second half of the season.

How do you know that Gualtieri and Mekies won't leave?
Regarding Mekies at least, AMuS reported it and as we know they're pretty well informed most of the time.

#AMuS also reports that the Laurent Mekies news (that he considers leaving) is old news. After Binotto left, Mekies looked at potential other places but that happened in December.

Back then Vasseur talked to him and convinced him to stay (made him his right hand).
#AMuS
@andihaupt1 reports that there was a leak about Enrico Cardile's contract. The leak said that his contract was running out.

Those leaks are deliberately spread, so that people think that there is a hire/fire culture at Ferrari now.
But that is not the case!
Tweets from "tami.".
The final comment basically saying there is no hire and fire mentality at Ferrari can be forgotten and laughed at, and just like Vasseur's comments can be filed in the "what else can they say?" These tweets seem to me in view of the facts rather as wishful thinking and castles in the air of some Ferrari fans. If I hire the 5th team principal in 9 years, then by definition I have a hire&fire policy. Especially if I fire a team principal who brought the team from rank 6 to 2 in only two years. And Binotto wanted to change the whole thing, but then became a victim of the bosses who probably preferred to reintroduce exactly this policy.

But thanks for the info about Mekies. However, I have now read several times that Vasseur had inserted his veto. There is just the question of how good it is if you force someone to stay who (maybe) actually does not want to stay. So rather questionable action. Ultimately, Ferrari must solve its real problems that go far deeper and higher than the current chaos at the middle level. However, this is extremely difficult, unfortunately.

10 grid penalty for Leclerc in Jeddah.

Yikes, another terrible news. Hopefully a decent strategy to reach P4 at least.
Given Vasseur has confirmed https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/vas ... /10443804/ that this track is likely to suit them more, there’s “mega room” for improvement through setup, and they’re brining updates to Jeddah,
Then in the classic Ferrari fashion they will surely find something to --- up. We have been disappointed like this so many times that I have lost the count. I have zero confidence in the competency of this team. They need to perform consistently for at least 3-4 races in a row to increase their competency.

Vasseur: “Leclerc will be penalized in Jeddah. Mekies will stay with us, he is a pillar of the team.”

Two control electronics modules lasted until 2/3 of the first race. Nice reliability...

Ferrari will need at least first 3 races to figure the car out. They will become dominant for the remaining races if there are no reliability issues.
Based on the sizeable handicap to a coasting Red Bull?

Let's hope the combination of:

-Adjusted FW
-"Real" RW
- Better understanding of the car overall

Can provide a significative jump in performance, especially in race trim.

I'm sure the final comment is in regards to now, as it says in the sentence too. I don't think that any person would doubt a tradidional fire and hire mentality at Ferrari.

As for Mekies and him supposedly being forced to stay, I can add a few more quotes from Vasseur:

Vasseur was asked if more people will leave the team (after Sanchez):

"If you mean 'key people' I don't think so, but otherwise in every F1 team there are constantly people leaving and others arriving. I can add that we are a solid group that is looking to the future."
There have been targeted rumours that Laurent Mekies is leaving. What is the internal context like these days?

Vasseur: "I think it is quite normal to be dissatisfied when you don't get the expected results and I can confirm that I am not happy with what I saw in Bahrain."
Vasseur: "But the most important thing is to work as a team and try to improve. About Laurent, personally I have known him for 25 years, I trust him, we have a very good partnership & he will be one of the pillars of the future the company is counting on."
Again, from "tami." on Twitter.

What is now has to be seen to be honest. The heads at the top are still the same and it's not like in Todt/Brawn/Byrne/Schumacher's times that they have no influence in this respect. And I don't think they will suddenly change after they just proved a few months ago that nothing has changed, they have learned nothing and understood nothing.

For Mekies - if he wants to leave, he can be forced to fulfill his contract, but that's about it and here the question is really how smart he is.

Ultimately, Ferrari's success will depend on whether words are finally followed by deeds. Even when things aren't going well and fans and the media are clamoring for heads to roll and culprits to be found. And whether one then the specialists, which one pays for the fact that they lead the team in peace can continue to work. Possibly also times over several years. Whereby one would have to do this first generally and not interfere almost daily. These things will decide Ferrari's success. And these things are the reason why Ferrari is always ahead of Red Bull or Mercedes. Because there these things are given and this contributes to the fact that one can work just those few percentage points better and more efficiently.
