Not sure how long he has left on his McLaren contract but he's getting paid for this year at tge very least.
Key is okay as a "stop gap" technical director, but he has shown to not really udnerstand this ground effect thing. Not sure williams want to go there. Where is Pat Fry these days? And now is a good time to insert Paddy Lowe back into the fold? Yeah it would be a downgrade for him, but at least put Paddy as some sort of consultant.
Remember when at Mclaren you had two design chiefs alternating each year, Paddy Lowe and Tim Goss. Paddy was the one that had the more extreme interpretations and usually the more competitive cars. He has always had fast cars. His failure at williams was more down to politics. He never got good backing there. I think things are different now with James, and Paddy could link up back and offer some help in the team building phase.
I can't help but wonder if Williams will look for an up and coming 2IC to a current TD. Build a younger team for the future instead of trying to get TD's who are commanding more money with a mid to top team.

Forget Key, forget Binotto- he dodged a bullet this year.
Adrian Newey is on the market, pretty sure Redbull will give him a blank cheque but if William was to come near his asking price, he might consider it given his background.
If memory serves, Adrian was wanting to step back years ago. Maybe that's because he was against these overly prescriptive aero rules...
But I can't imagine Adrian as good as he is willing to pack up shop in a team that he has huge amounts of say and influence in. Only to go back to his first championship winning team that is struggling near the back of the grid with way less tools and necessary structures in place to create a winning car.
The Williams die hard fan in me says 'bring it on', but the realist in me has me rolling on the floor laughing at the idea!
