I think they needed a prep lap to get the softs working, but because they expected rain 3-4 mins from the end, they fueled the first run such that they would end up pitting just before the rain (like everyone did). But that meant when the rain didn't show up, there wasn't enough time for a prep lap in the second run, only a warmup.

They were right with Merc/amr until the final run when they had to fire the tyres up immediately. Further supports the idea from Jeddah that they struggle for tyre temperature?

Charles Leclerc post-quali team radio (P7):

"Sh… run. No prep lap. The rain is not there. Big thanks to Carlos for the tow. Got a bit of speed there. Always nice."

yeah crappy quali error with forecast of rain which made them not do the run properly... Somehow SAI just always is able to do what's best despite the calls from the team.

Anyway... I'm sure telemetry will show the same loss of time in T1, T6 and T9-10. Such a weird thing that they nail S3 but S1 and S2 are so bad.

Shows that the car just is not balanced out. If it’s fast at X, it’s slow at Y. It’s hard to setup and it’s just not happy in every kind of corner throughout a lap. Peaky, like the drivers said.

But what still gives me hope is that the car does not seem to have a downforce problem. It’s been right there on all three tracks until now.

Did Sainz ignore the team and do a prep lap?

How is Mercedes race pace looking from the long runs? Alonso will jump Merc in first 5 laps. Hopefully Lec doesn’t get stuck behind SAI and can jump Mercedes.

No, before Charles started his lap, the engineer told him that he will get a tow from Sainz down the straight so his race engineer already knew that Sainz wont be doing a fast lap.

This is Melbourne. No one will jump anyone in the first 5 laps (unless there are mistakes or such).

There's such a thing called start. So Alonso might jump them before the first turn.

Makes sense, he still ended up doing a fast lap later though and beat LEC's lap since his was later and ended up having a prep lap done.

Thank you, Mr. Obvious. Jambuka said in the first 5 laps, not at the start. Maybe we’ll have 5 starts, then you’re right.

Does start happen after the first 5 laps ?

No, but if you meant right at the start before T1, you would have said so. It does not make sense to say in the first 5 laps. You obviously meant sometime in the first 5 laps Alonso, due to having a pace advantage, would jump them. And this will not happen (if not right at the start).

yeah...

ALO v SAI

LEC v ALO

T1, T6 (really bad), T9-10 fpr LEC and T1, T4-5 (really bad) and T9-10 for SAI.

Really need to hope that the car is setup well for the race because if they also churn through tires...

I will say for the FP1 doesn't matter crowd that sadly these same weaknesses have been there since FP1, just like last year the same weakness in S3 was there since FP1 for VER.

Sainz on the clean side might be able to jump Fernando for 4th.
