FIA clarification on the topic is:

When considering what is a ‘significant portion’, for an overtaking on the inside of a corner, among the various factors that will be looked at by the stewards when exercising their discretion, the stewards will consider if the overtaking non-Ferrari car is ahead of the other non-Ferrari car from the apex of the corner. Special Appendix IIb is reserved for discussing cases where Ferrari cars are involved.
It wasnt a overtake on the outside though. Max was on the racing line, with Russell's front wheel level(ish) with the rear of Max's wheels.

Even in the media interview Russell was surpised Max was trying to overtake around the outside....Yet Max was ahead so it was a overtake from Russell up the inside.
Yeah I edited inside (although first version had outside). I'm also just joking, read the paragraph I wrote :).

But in all seriousness I do think RUS had no business being there, but there's no chance stewards penalize this, and only half joking that it's because he doesn't drive a Ferrari.
If Max had been spun around, they would have penalized it but they both continued so it's overlooked.

IT's not the same thing as Sainz in Australia as you are trying to claim.

Remember when Russell got the penalty in USA last year for spinning Sainz on lap 1? Or did Sainz get the penalty in USA, correct me if I'm wrong

We have to move on from Australia.

Ok let's banter. Max got punted wide and STILL made the corner? Seems like he pinched Russell and should have left more space...he clearly had more room on the outside if he GOT HIT and still made the corner. I think its his fault entirely.
How can you be left space if you hit the wall? Thats a clear indication that NO space was left after GR sent it up the inside.
He made the corner. He tapped tapped the wall way later in the corner after he was upset and lost control of his right foot. Look at where George ended up. He wasn't even close to VER at exit. Sorry buddy, Max pinched it TIGHT. 100% his fault.

Missed your edit. 100% agree that Russell had no business to be there. We have all seen things penalised for less. Just look at the Sainz incident from Australia. No where near as bad and he got a 5 second penalty.

I honestly was just trolling with previous comments. Sorry.

There's nothing else to do man... This thing ruined the race tomorrow, everyone's pace is well known and the only fight we had in these 14 laps was from RUS who's starting 11th tomorrow.

EDIT: and that being said anyway... Penalties aren't assessed based on consequences.

He was behind at the apex and understeered into Max's side to make the corner. I've been accused of literal hate towards Max and RedBull multiple times here, to defend them feels very ridiculous, but when Max does this stuff, which is often, I also attack him/RBR. I wish Stewards had some consistency.

Oh look what have we here, alonso able to go down the inside of T2 without locking up and hitting the apex nicely. Meanwhile russell is dumbfounded why verstappen was trying to hang it round the outside =D>

Did Max already forget what racing looks like? It means going for a gap that the guy ahead left open... He went in plenty of times when there was no gap, and got away with it

Nothing wrong with racing and being overtaken, doing all this while locked up and killing other guy's race is a problem, yes.

When he was the driver with everything to gain and little to lose all gaps looked different (not just him, everyone defending v attacking when there is a championship at stake)

More I see of Russel and his racing at the front the more and more desperate I think he is to get a overtake done whatever the risk.
France last year when he did similar to Perez, who had space to avoid him fortunately. I’m sure there is a handful more examples of his desperation to get past.

He knows the very fine percentage he has of a overtake, even a sniff, he will try and send it.

I bet there will be more examples to come this season too.

I seriously think Russell would have got the better of Max in 2021 in that Mercedes, he knows how to race the Dutch driver.

If I understood correctly, Leclerc actually did that sprint race on a set of new mediums (Ferrari had 4 new sets of mediums saved on Friday vs 3 for Red Bull). Red Bull started on a set of mediums from the sprint qualy. So with both Red Bulls having a new set of mediums for tomorrow, their first stint should be even stronger relative to Ferrari.
