One can see how Red Bull have designed the parts to be able to mix and match beam wings and rear wings n order to reduce cost:

I haven't been able to see this detail on last year's car.
Well spotted. Following Alpine's lead in this regard.

I think its just a reflection and lighting playing tricks.

There are actually openings. I could well imagine that you slowly get into the area that you play with the pressure between the top and bottom of the floor and this is perfected. But I'm not an aerodynamicist. Maybe one of our specialists here can say something about this.

Openings in the sense that they can remove a panel that covers it yes, but otherwise that's just the way the light has reflected off the curved surface. There is no actual opening there, it's just a cover for the lower SIP.
There is an opening. This can be clearly seen in the enlarged image.

It's just shadows and lights playing tricks. This is exactly like the infamous slotted diffuser side wall, which was really just shadows from the brake tin/tire.

This is the car in Miami. There is no "opening".

The level of detail in the floor edge is incredible!
The sidepod also looks to be even further undercut with the newly revised inlet.
There are also hints of clever in the shaping of the floor, it almost looks as though the diffuser is brought right up to the strake line (a definite upward bulge next the the FEW.
Perspective - Understanding that sometimes the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view.

Yes, in this photo you can indeed see that nothing is there. Thank you for exposing the trick of the light.

When RedBull revealed their Baku upgrades it originally appeared to me that they went on to a more Aston Martin way with their sidepod inlets, but since no one else mentioned it then I forgot about it. Though Giorgio Piola said recently in a video that is the case, while maintaining their differences, RedBull has been inspired by Aston Martin in their higher, more shorter vertically and wider arrangement of the inlets compared to the more squarer shape they had before. Or at least that's what Piola thinks, what about you guys.

Very clever use of the diffuser!!

It serves as its own beam wing.

They lowered the roof of the diffuser slightly sloping to the sides so that they can use the resulting upper surface of it to make flicks in the shape of the beam wing.

When combined with the main beam wing, the resulting effect is like having two proper beam wings. Astounding. Smart.

This extra bit of pull likely makes up for the slight lowering of the diffuser roof and then some.

I think it's such an innovative idea that other teams willimmediately copy.

I think they had these inlets ready for a while already based on Silverstone shakedown photos and has designed them long before seeing Aston martin's 2023 design, so I think it's not likely

Plus why should only Aston inspire RB to run a higher and wider inlet when Ferrari used that for entire '22 season?

Thank you for replying. Well I wish I could ask those questions to the italians.

Yeah. It gets the vortex from the mirrors out wider is what I think.

Yeah. It gets the vortex from the mirrors out wider is what I think.
I am not sure the mirror support/VG has moved much which can be seen from the pictures below. And even if it has moved, they have not exploited the new maximum width of the wider inlet when placing the mirror support/VG, so I think first and foremost the inlet change is more about tuning flow to the undercut, an area where they've placed a large development focus compared to the RB18
