Fortunately Ocon was in 3rd meaning Merc/Ferrari were at arms length and there was enough time to box again. Maybe that's what they had in their mind when they boxed for new mediums :
If the rain continues/gets heavier then they can still box for inters and retain p2. If the rain stops/gets lighter then the medium tyre is ideal and can begin the undercut on max earlier and RB may not respond instantly for fear of the rain
Buuut yes not a good call since there was large risk of sliding off for Fernando
Let's see what excuse Lance has for today's lacklustre performance. Second in the constructors is very much in threat due to his incompetency in bringing home clean weekends.
Missed chance today with Alonso's pit call, but it would still have been a long shot even if he did go onto Inters. Max still had a significant time margin.

I thought the same. Unfortunately, going inters would have won the race. Alonso would have been too fast for Max to overtake.
An honest assessment would be that the car is just not competitive enough yet to win races. But atleast P2 in the driver’s championship looks up for grabs if Alonso can continue to average about 15 points a race. Will end up easily with 300+ points or so, which is conventionally enough for 2nd place…

Alonso had a free pitstop due to the on track backup of 15s. If he went inters, he would have overtaken Verstappen. You need like 2s/lap advantage to overtake. Alonso would have held him easily.
It made no sense whatsoever. First, if they were unsure, they couldve waited another lap. Second, literally everyone else was going on inters at the exact same time so clearly the information suggested inters. Third, if you're Aston Martin you should be gambling to win a race and not consolidate position. They didn't deserve the win on pace but their strategy team comes out looking very shaky. This wasnt a close 50-50 call that went wrong in hindsight. This made no sense from the get go. Best case scenario is that it was just a blunder and they put the wrong tyres on.

Superb from Alonso again- another weekend with the maximum available delivered on Sunday. What a driver.
Aston have a great base car to build on for these next couple of seasons- especially if they can unlock the Red Bull drag efficiency
I feel that they are very, very close. If their wind tunnel advantage is used and produces results, the back 9 of the season could legitimately be a toss-up.
It was would have been 50/50 if Alonso had pitted. When both had Inters (After Alonso's Extra Stop), Max was 20s odd ahead. He should have pitted for Inters, would have been 1 lap ahead of Max & atleast could have attacked Max coming out of the pits. Maybe I am over-thinking, but atleast the gap would be 2-3s behind Max. The pitstop was a bad call & in competitive races where Ferrari/Mercedes/Perez will be around, it will cost them places. Hopefully, Aston has better strategists than Ferrari. RB have a brilliant strategy team. If they had pitted in the Medium Window & gave up track position to Alonso & then both would have pitted for Inters, this race would have been done. Excellent job by Max & RB Strategy team.
Max won the race on the mediums. He was as quick as Alonso on the Hards & ran that tyre for 50+ Laps well beyond that window when that tyre should have had more degradation vs the Hards of Alonso. That gap should have been non-existent, Alonso should have been @ the back of Max & quicker post the 1st 20-25 laps. RB is still a superior car, not just Drag or DRS wise but is as competitive in the slow speed corners (traction required) & a shade quicker on the faster corners. Aston had a much bigger Rear Wing/Downforce on some tracks & hence maybe looked quicker but they are possibly equal to a shade slower in slow speed corners as well.
Overall, I see Aston @ around 4-5 tenths off in race pace on a normal track, possibly 1-2 tenths further down on qualy pace. RB did bring more upgrades vs Aston & apparently gained but perhaps Aston made up time from set-up & understanding a newer concept better vs the 1st couple of races. Alonso initially was around 3-4 tenths off in Miami before he started managing the tyres & Max & Checo were fighting for the win. Aston will need to close the gap, get to 2-3 tenths off race pace to have chances in tracks like Barca, Singapore etc. Max is an elite driver & will not make rookie mistakes & give up wins. The floor is fairly basic so I don't why they haven't brought a floor upgrade, they should have had multiple floor upgrades or should have by 1st Half which is where most of the time should come from.
RB will improve but it is possible for Aston to find half a second between for Half 1 & be more competitive in the 2nd half & fight for the occasional wins because @ this pace, they will hover around P3-P4 types with the occasional P2 if Max/Perez get a penalty/have reliability issues. They brought changes to the brake duct, front & real suspension + Customized Rear Wing. Krack said they have a couple of things for Barca, hopefully Floor & then they will have another couple of upgrades for Canada & Silverstone. They need to find atleast half a second within Barca, Canada & Silverstone & maybe they will have a chance in some races ! I think everyone wants Alonso to break the 10 year lull of not having any wins this season !

The timing sheets suggests otherwise, even on a track like this where the RB cannot use it’s full strength. There was no contest in the race, and the only reason the times were sometimes close was that Max was managing a heavily grained tyre and even then Alonso could not close in on a better tyre. Max with the hards on in a normal race would be absolutely gone.
Aston can however consolidate second position. It’s a good car with a stellar driver behind the wheel.
The Aston isn’t anywhere near the RB. Even on a track like this, it wasn’t a contest. Alonso should get a win this season, but it will be due to RB unreliability. Simply don’t have the pace.
Great race by Alonso. He made it Max earn that win, until rain arrived. Once it rained, it was chaos and Max is a good wet racer. Hope AM brings some strong upgrades to put Alonso closer to Max.
