The fastest F1 car of all time?

Post

Am I right in thinking it's probably the Ferrari F2004?

It seems to hold a lot of all-time race lap circuit records, but that could partly be the Schumacher effect, and of course the circuits have often changed over the years.

fastest car should be the MP4-20....it would be the the best ever car if not have the reliability issues.

f2004 was also faster but mp4-20 have a better aero.

The question posted was : fastest F1 car.
At 08:00 local time on Monday 17th July 2006 at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, USA, the Honda Racing F1 Team scored a triple success by setting a new F1 speed record, and breaking two existing land speed marks.

Driver Alan van der Merwe piloted a race legal Honda 007 along a seven mile-long salt straight, achieving an aggregate speed of 220.571mph over two runs of a measured mile. The speed was recorded by both the Federation Internationale Automobile (FIA) and the United States Auto Club (USAC) and now represents the fastest ever recorded by a Formula 1 car over a timed distance, pending official ratification by the FIA.

As well as setting the world’s first official land speed record for a F1 car, the speed achieved also represented a new mark for the A2-8 class of land speed vehicles, and a new best speed of 355.499kph for the flying kilometre.

Racing should be decided on the track, not the court room.

Do you mean fastest in terms of lap times, or fastest compared to the opposition of the day? Surely the MP4/13 would've been up there with the F2004. Maybe the 92 Williams or the MP4/4 winning 15/16 which could've easily been all 16?

Just a couple of thoughts. I'm sure there are plenty of other examples, but I'm too young to go back too far!

I doubt if anything would compete in a straight line with the turbo-cars of 1985-86, the Brabham BT54-BMW with 1300+ Hp in qualifying trim?

I'm not sure the drag was so bad actually, there had already been rear-wing reductions in 1985, "ears" gone.
Car was wider yes, but the front-wheels were also smaller than today.

the drag was very bad, speed trap at Monza with the most powerful engine ever seen in F1 (motor racing ?), 1986 with Benetton B186 and BMW turbo at about 5,5 bars ( about 1300 bhp) : 351 Km/h. If I remember well Williams BMW did something like 380 Km/h with the last year of 3,5 l engines.

There was never a 3.5 liter BMW engine, they went out in 95 and BMW joined in 99.

And 380 km/h with 800 Hp? If you can reach 310 with today's cars and 700 Hp, you would need 1300 hp to reach 380 with the same car when drag is related to cube of speed.

of course I mean 3 l, it was 930 hp for the best engines, Pizzonia did 369,9 Km/h in 2004 race.

Define "fastest."

One reasonable definition would be "the F1 car that held the greatest margin of superiority in lap times over the cars it competed against."

Can any of you Sultans of Statistics help here? I'm sure someone out there can work up some charts . . .

369.9 km/h? That was a very specific number benjabulle, please be as specific with place and date?

And 930 hp for the 3.0 liter V10 in 2004? I doubt that very much actually.
