2023 Austrian Grand Prix - Spielberg, June 30 - July 02

For ease of use, there is one thread per grand prix where you can discuss everything during that specific GP weekend. You can find these threads here.

2 m strip of grass then asphalt does seem like an ideal solution as AR3-GP keeps bringing up. You get the immediate punishment and then get to catch it and slow down on the asphalt run off (more so than gravel, at least). What's the catch though? MotoGP couldn't use it?
I don't think moto would have a problem with that idea
I find it funny that people here believe that nobody ever thought of that already :).

In all likelihood they have a set of known corner edges that could be implemented and discussed them all and couldn't find a compromise that worked and not enough pressure to do it.

Maybe this changes now.
I find it amusing that you treat others' ideas with derision but things you've supported in this thread is exactly the FIA has done this weekend. And it's resulted in this --- in both qualifying and now the race. So forgive me for not taking you seriously in this matter :D

I'm sure they've evaluated these options before.. it's just that they were wrong to dismiss them. The RBR is primarily an F1 circuit and if the race results take hours post-race to decide at this circuit and qualifying has drivers kicked out early for supposed infringements that are later reversed.. it doesn't work as an F1 circuit!

What's to take seriously? Send an email to RBR then, they will thank you and this forum for the solution nobody could think of. Evidently they can design spaceships which don't need a track to go fast as they fly through it (so they aren't that good at designing tracks).

Edit: my starting point is simply that people that work on these tracks, and RBR in particular aren't a bunch of morons to begin with.

Amateur hour from Lewis
Car won’t turn was his report. Brake issues during first stint
“Car won’t turn”
That sounds quite dangerous….

an example of what a badly place hard preventative measure can do.

You're comparing grass to a sausage kerb launching a car vertical. Ridiculous. What are you doing.

I thought they might have been able to do a 1m wide sunken gravel trap that can be easily lifted out (say 3” deep) and can just hoover all the gravel out. Then there’s a drop in section to cover the hole up for the Moto gp stuff.

Not really sure what else could be out there. Grass has potential for a F1 car to lose the rear end and head sideways or backwards down towards the next turn.

Just to be clear what the argument in this thread seems to be from my perspective:

* They should have had natural track edges, in absence of those each driver can do whatever they want because policing staying on track is bad.

This seems to be the argument I hear. On my side the argument is:

* What happened is also disappointing in my view, but the alternative of allowing drivers differing amounts of leaving track unpunished is not fair at all and IMHO arguably worse than the alternative.

either way FIA needs to continue progress on what technology they want to implement to prevent leaving track unpunished while keeping all track users lives safe.

Loss of traction leading to spin and sub optimal tire barrier strike. The can be assessed, in fact surely already has at most circuits. Don't put grass on those corners if such a problem exists. On the other corners, put grass. Grass won't launch a car though, obv. Is there a specific corner that is a good example where grass would be dangerous? I'm genuinely curious.

How about teflon or oleophobic, bolt down kerbs 1m from the white line? Just reduce the friction coefficient of the surface to reduce desire to run over it.

Bring back the gravel so they really regret biting off too much. I'd much rather see instant on track ramifications.
The way thing seem to be going they would call a safety to clean up gravel every time someone put a tyre off.

That grass Timo Glock launched over a few years ago is prob not a great one..lol

Ahahahaha

This is true. And to be fair I can understand why it is difficult to find the right on track solution.

But at the very least the FIA should have tech like Hawkeye to monitor corners. It's not exactly new technology.
